It came from "A Captain's Name"

And women in skintight jumpsuits and men is miniskirts .... or maybe not.

I like the space station idea. Or how about a planet based starbase? Don't think we've seen that before, plus you could have a whole storyline about the indigenous population.

I like the TMP idea. I'm generally a TOS fan, but there's so little we know about the TMP era you could really do a lot with it. Also, if you've got men in skintight jumpsuits and women in miniskirts, I'm all over that.
I'm still not sure, though I have to say I am swaying towards TMP.

Well they had men in miniskirts at the beginning of TNG, so why not a century earlier?

Planet based does sound interesting, can't say I've ever thought about doing something like that before. It is worth considering, especially if the natives were scantily-clad nymphos.

Time to put the thinking hat back on...

Thought up some new additions to add to the cast of characters, most in a recurring/supporting role.

Lieutenant Kahra R'Keyr - The Caitian Security Chief, who is bold, daring and shoots from the hip, and lets others deal with diplomacy and politics. [I see Ron Perlman in the role, handy as he had a good Caitian-esque look in "Beauty and the Beast"]

***

Commander Vei Fernau - A Tiburonian woman who heads up the local JAG service. Worldly-wise, tactful and shrewd she is a voice of reason and experience. [Played by Tracy Scroggins]

Lt. Commander Juliette Lowe - The resident head shrink. [Played by Emilia Fox]

Lieutenant Taio Nal - The Deltan in charge of Customs onboard, his Oath of Celibacy may or may not be on file. [Played by Sean Maher]

Lieutenant Diego Alvarez - Supply Officer and lovable rogue, he is looking for a way to make enough credits to go out on his own adventure. [Played by Adam Rodriguez]

Lieutenant Nancy Young - The fiery-haired and passionate Head Nurse. [Played by Deborah Ann Woll]

Lieutenant JG Jyda Keen - A free-spirited Catullan woman who serves as Senior Pilot. [Played by Hannah Spearritt]

Lieutenant JG Karog gersh Mor - Not your typical Tellarite, he pulls double duties as Transporter Chief and Computer Officer. [Played by Andrew Lee Potts]

Interesting.

What's the name of the station? And when you say TMP, is it before or after the events that occurred in the movie? Also are there going to be any surprise visits from the Enterprise at all? :bolian:

I'm very curious about this project, Bry, since TMP has literally been untouched.

Interesting.
Why thank you :)

What's the name of the station?
I'm not sure that to call it. Currently looking at what might be a suitable name. Suggestions are very welcome at this point.

And when you say TMP, is it before or after the events that occurred in the movie?
Going by what some sources say, the Movie takes place in 2273 (the Enterprise was on a five year mission that started in 2265, and Scotty said Kirk hadn't logged a single starhour in two and a half years, so that's when I plan on setting it). I was thinking of starting off in 2272, it would allow for a good moment of tension as all they can do is sit and wait to hear what happens.

Also are there going to be any surprise visits from the Enterprise at all? :bolian:
That could be something, Captain St. John has to put up with Admiral-Captain Kirk drooling all over her . They would be referenced and I might feature some of the crew, though not sure if I'd have the whole gang show up.

I'm very curious about this project, Bry, since TMP has literally been untouched.
It is sounding like a better time to set it every time I think about it. Hmmm...

Possible station/base names:
  • Hesperides - In Greek mythology, the sacred garden of Hera from where the gods got their immortality.
  • Nibiru - A mythological planet described by the Babylonians.
  • Themiscyra - In Greek mythology, the capital city of the Amazons.

Just an update. I've decided to go with TMP timeframe for this idea.

Not settled on the name of the base yet though.

Hesperides -- A relatively low-tech "bread-basket" planet, with vertical farms and solar power fields dotting the landscape. A small-to-medium Hawaii-like oceanside resort-town with modern touches that hosts Hesperides' residential, educational, commercial, & administration centers. Para-sailing residents, a modest spaceport, continental transporter center, and a small wharf where amphibious craft surface from beneath the waves occasionally, accepting and disembarking passengers from domed underwater communities serving as the roots of domestic power generation, mining, etc.

Even a Starfleet Command outpost displayed prominently in the center of the community, built with obvious Vulcan architecture, with it's own shuttle ingress/egress platform, several stories above street level.

Dogs, cats and even cattle lazily roam the pedestrian lanes with impugnity. You'll seldom find the streets without horseback riders, people throwing frisbees and people on bicycles with trailers stopping periodically to barter in the market. There is, of course, a specifically posted area designated as the area's "red light district" with a tavern and obligatory 'baudy house'.

Sounds like a winner.

It does sound pretty good (also the fact they are on the beach and have lovely tropical weather would be an excuse to whip out the alternative shorts to go with uniform), though I've never done a planet-based piece before. Not sure how to go about it.

Before I start on pieces, I like to have the design of the ship/base/whatever fixed in my head (layout, specs, crew, etc) in order to get a sense of "realism", in that this is a fully functioning facility where people live as well as work. But seeing as how planetary bases are few and far between I'm drawing a blank (not helped by the huge writers block I'm suffering right now).

I did think that they would have satellites in orbit for sensors, communications and defense, as well as quite a few shuttles and the TOS/TMP equivilant of runabouts (I also thought about giving them a small ship to use in order to scout/survey/reconnoitre the region, something like an Archer-Class--I love that design).

But how would the facility be laid out? Any thoughts?

The safest bet would probably be some sort of base/compound a few miles from the population center to keep it reasonably safe in case the Klingons/Tholians/Gorn/Orions/aliens with a grudge come calling.

But perhaps more interesting would be a Starfleet complex right in the city/population center. This way your characters could more easily interact with the local population. Or how about a base with an integrated space port which is managed by Starfleet? All alien visitor would have to come through the port and you have yourself a DS9 kinda series. The spaceport could also house a small Starfleet ship and of course it'd have some ground based sensor arrays, shield generators and phaser batteries as well as some orbital satellites.

I'd lay out a base either as an office building (especially in a bustling city with limited space) or a university (different buildings for different departments). Or like a modern military base, which isn't much different from a university AFAIK. Barracks buildings for the bachelor troops. The submarine base in Groton, CT has its own bowling alley and a PX, and outlying suburban townhouses for families to live in. You'll need a main command center, probably a combination of offices, for officers who need them, and air traffic control for your shuttles and runabouts. Buildings could be arranged like city blocks, or in concentric circles around either the command center or a central park area.

What about situated at the foot of a fruitful valley, at the foot of a massive rain forest waterfall? A modest-sized basin at the bottom feeds a river running right down the middle of the settlement on the valley floor.

The top of the mountain houses the solar power fields and some agriculture.

The town has a concentric circular layout with two-lane wide laneways, replete with pedestrian/vehicle bridges arching over the river interspersed between the housing, commercial and artisan/gallery buildings. A community flower garden for public meetings and a clam-shell auditorium open-air theater. The waterfall basin has two or three small wharfs with "old earth"-style sailing vessels for recreation, complete with covered slips for maintenance.

The main "facility" is embedded in the mountainside above the town, Three Valkyrie-Class fighter / Argo-Class runabout launch deck doors protrude from the face of the valley wall on one side or both of the waterfall, part way up the cliff. Occasional observation deck / office windows peek out of the cliff, too. Sort of like the mountain base from "SG-1" in the Pegasus Galaxy in the "Stargate Universe" pilot episode, combined with the "Haven" holoprogram from "Star Trek: Voyager". Imagine this with all the expected subspace antennae, etc. A base renovated and customized from severely ancient lavatubes & chambers in a dormant volcano perfect for geo-thermal power taps.

All of this in a recessed cove/inlet, facing out on a Pacific Ocean type span of fresh water, nicknamed "The Fort". At the foot of the waterfall, there's primitive water-wheels for power. An eclectic mix of modern apartments, small english cottages, and tall/lean european townhomes, various ethnic bakeries, holo-arcades, bachelor barracks and warehouses, schools & playgrounds, motor pools, trader-ship/freighter landing pads, continental transporter building, shield generators, phaser/torpedo emplacements, etc.

If you're lucky, if you're free-diving at the right time, you can hear the "song" of the Xindi Aquatics as they're running their research station a few hundred fathoms below the ocean.

Here are some thoughts I had about the planet, its inhabitants and some background on the base.

As for the design of the facility, I have found a good layout for the Command Building and I thought I might use something similar to the Planet Express Building (from Futurama) as the Science & Research Centre. Still need to find a good hospital, security complex, operations/resource facility, space port, recreation centre and of course accommodation.

Let me know what you think.

The Nevari Cluster, four systems (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta) located on the fringe of Federation space. In 2251, a Dentai transport ship fleeing the Tholian invasion of Denaris Prime, crashed on Alpha Nevari II, where the 1679 survivors were forced to settle. Nineteen years later, Starfleet first charted the system and made contact with the Dentai colony. The Dentai, fearing reprisals from the Tholian Assembly, sought protection under the Federation.

The small colony had been forced to cannibalise their ship in order to make shelters, had found plentiful food and managed to survive for almost twenty years on their own (during which their population grew to 1751), but they had no means of building industry, developing an economy or trading with other races. Starfleet responded to their plea for help and established a planetary facility, intended to help develop their infrastructure, assess their suitability for protectorate status, and facilitate Starfleet Operations in the Nevari Cluster and beyond.

Ground was broken for Starbase 200 (also known as Hesperides Station) in early 2271 and the facility was completed by the end of the year, though it was only formally commissioned into active duty in the first quarter of 2272. The base was designed to accommodate up to 600, both service personnel and civilians (Federation officials and crewmembers family). The U.S.S. Virgo an Archer-Class vessel was attached to the station for the crew to utilise in scouting, surveying, reconnoitring and patrolling the immediate region, whilst the Federation Cargo Authority gave two Merchantman-Class freighters to the colony to use in developing their own trade routes.

Dentai – A warp-capable, humanoid species, originating from Denaris (now under Tholian control). Their technology is on par with late 22nd century Starfleet, whilst they are a socially and ethically advanced people. With a lifespan of between sixty and seventy-five years they mature rapidly, reaching adulthood at twelve. They are roughly the same height as humans, though have a lean and lithe build. They are almost identical to humans though with a few distinguishing features: they have opposable thumbs and three fingers per hand; they have a long and highly dexterous tail; and they hair comes in a much brighter range of colours (including scarlet, jade, aqua, platinum-blonde, cobalt and indigo).

Whilst trying to avoid doing work, I started thinking about this idea. I'm not sure I'll ever work on it, but I often find when developing ideas new ones come to me for existing projects. Also its a bit of fun for a 'what might be' scenario.

I finally came to some decisions regarding the setting and the characters. So let me present:

Star Trek: Far Horizon

In 2264, Starfleet ventured into the Nevari Cluster, a remote, unclaimed region beyond the outer fringes of Federation space in the Alpha Quadrant. Determined to be the first major power in the region, Starfleet scheduled construction of the last of the K-Class stations in the Alpha Nevari System.

The S.C.E. decided to use K-20 as a testbed for a new refit all K-Class stations were due to undergo during the next decade. Adopting and modifing aspects of orbital office/spacelab facilities, though on a much larger scale, the final design was intended to make greater use of newer technologies which would greatly improve the stations capabilties. After twenty-two months of intensive work, K-20 (or Horizon as it had become commonly known among the engineers) was commissioned into active service. Placed under the command of newly-promoted Captain Lana St. John, the station was ready to become the command-supply-repair base for a task force assigned to the region.

But as hostilities with the Klingons increased, the re-emergence of the Romulan Star Empire, as well as increasing tensions with various other species, Starfleet was unable to commit the resources it had originally intended. All that could be spared was the Miranda-Class medium cruiser U.S.S. Gallant NCC-1816 under the command of Captain Vei Ferantu, and the Antares-Class frigate U.S.S. Boudicca NCC-432 which was attached to the station for its defence, as well as short-range scouting and surveying missions.

Weeks for support, the crew of Horizon Station and the U.S.S. Gallant must work closely together, in order to ensure Starfleet's position in the area and continue their mission of peaceful exploration and first contact.

Sounds interesting, Bry. You're definitely getting yourself ready for something great here. I can't wait to read it.
