News Isaacs: Hidden Depths To Lorca

Isaacs' comments here are pretty tame. I think, in general, he's putting up a mirror to us. Maybe for those who he's offended, he's actually hit pretty close to the mark.

In other words: In general, people? Chill.

Of course he does, he is trying to promote a new TV show in which he stars. Getting people talking about it is very important at this stage, and we're more responsive to his more cutting comments than the endless stuff actors say about how great it is to do this show, how amazing this or that person is, how the cast are a family, etc.

A time of war may exist during the show, but the people on the Discovery are scientists explorers, not warriors, and the fact they did not join Starfleet to be soldiers is a plot point of the show:

Quote from show-runner Aaron Harberts:
“These Starfleet officers who find themselves in war are very quick to remind the audience that they didn’t sign up to do that,” he said. “That they are explorers first; that they are diplomats first. So our officers are quick to comment on the fact that this is not Starfleet’s mission. War is not why we’re here. And in fact, Discovery is a science vessel that has been conscripted for the war effort.”

Yet another war for the non-military Starfleet to fight. How many is that now?

I'm sorry, every time they do war they just cement Starfleet as the military in my mind.

Seems like he likes to stir but I dislike him for it. Kind of hope his character gets killed off.. fast.
Seems like the ones who like to stir are media highlighting quotes out of context, and folks who rail against him post after post like this.

I don't think he's that clever. He just wants attention..
You don't have to be clever to realize die hard fans are an easy demographic.

100% agree - again, I think GR's sudden instance the Star Fleet was a non-military organization was one of the first things I'd call a 'retcon' in Star Trek - and something he started saying on the Convention circuit trying to get someone to do a follow up Star Trek themed series once the show became a hit in syndication.

TOS episodes like "Balance of Terror", "Court Martial", "The Menagerie", "Arena", "Errand of Mercy", (hell even the plot point of the 'mission' the 1701 is on in "Amok Time" <-- A diplomatic 'show of power' that: "...will cause ripples clear to the Klingon Empire") ALL show that Star Fleet is in fact a Military organization.

Finally read the whole thing..it's a very good interview and should alleviate some of the butt hurt Trekkie woes.
