Is your job getting you down?

Sorry to hear about that. Ever thought of government work? At least they can't out-source.

I work for the government and you can get RIFed. A reduction in force can happen at any time. I know of several people who lost their jobs when their base was closed. You are supposed to be top of the list for other jobs, but if you can't move to where the jobs are you're still screwed. A lot of jobs are being contracted out, too. Most of the IT jobs on my base are contractors.

I like my job, but the mis-management has ruined it for me. No oversight, no accountability = shift wars. It's doubly sad to see this happen in a home for the disabled, but I'm done.
This is not just another attack on "teh management". For instance, there was a period of over three months where this group home had no vegetables. I'm the only person who actually cooks there anyway. When I'm off the guys don't get shaved. I had one guy go 6 weeks without a light in his room. Another guy has had pants that don't fit him for 6 years. They're supposed to get a little money for their weekends - never happens.
I've brought all of this stuff, and more, up at staff meetings. Nothing ever happens. I don't go to staff meetings anymore. And let's not even get started on how only two people get all the overtime.
Place needs a union, badly.

^ Thanks for the encouragement K'Ehleyr!

A few things have made me think twice about going into bartending, mainly having to deal with potentially agressive drunk customers and having to clean up vomit and other bodily fluids. But then i realised i have had to help my friends or friends of friends in similar situations so hopefully i can handle it. But starting off part time is a good idea particularly if i end up not liking it.

I was trying to be encouraging.
It can be a really fun, rewarding and enjoyable job.

This last week I've had customers in that I haven't seen since New Year and we caught up with what we'd all done. Talking about holidays, families etc... and it was really good...
Then I had to go and de-grease and clean the club's oven, hob, grill etc... with evil stuff and came home with my hands radioactive!

If you are going to go that way, and if you want to then that's the best start, practise your 'Hello, how are you? What can I get you', but also, and most important, your 'don't fuck with me' face ~ A stern stance and a raised eyebrow is usually just what it takes.

I've been in the trade for 20 yrs and have learnt that most customers are just grateful for a smile and attention. If you remember their name ~ then that could be a Xmas tip ;)

Try it out, it's scary at first, but just be yourself and you'll find out if it's for you or not.

Good luck mm.

Very few people are completely happy in there job I find ranging from boredom to out right hatred. I work for a newspaper and everybody talks about leaving from time to time.
The thing to remember I think is there is always a way out to better things it may just take a while.
Don't give up on your dreams

Unless - like mine -your dreams involve taking a 50% cut in your wages.

Holey moley! I went for an interview today to take a full time cook position in a nice restaurant in a small seaside country town an hour out of Melbourne. Accommodation included. What a nice change that would be! Fun work, nice location, living on what passes for Main Street, and a position of responsibility to boot. I'd be banging a different chick every night. Right?

Turns out that wages in hospitality aren't just shit, they are very shit. Mind bogglingly shit. I would totally and literally lose half of the money I am earning now by sitting in an office all day downloading porn and occasionally answering the phone.

I was told that $45,000/pa is very good money for a cook and what I was asking for is the sort of money a head chef might pull .. if he's a brilliant head chef.

You know there are some industries where the starting salary is over $45,000.

I think I need to reassess my future career plans.

I hate my job. The hours suck, one boss isn't qualified, another boss is an upper management ass-kisser and has no problem throwing people under the bus, and stupid people call all the time and treat us like we're their personal internet search engine. The job itself is fine and I like my co-workers, but the bad stuff I just mentioned is taking their toll on me.

You don't play with your food.
Maybe you don't, but I cannot see how one could resist slicing grey matter into microscopic pieces and mapping the neurons with sophisticated software in an attempt to elucidate the physical processes that define the mind before ravenously zombie-feasting on a tender hunk of parietal lobe!
And when I thought I couldn't be more scared of you... suddenly I am.

I know science can be frightening to some, but progress does not have to be the end of old beliefs and traditions, just a more enlightened way of practicing them. In my philosophy, you can have your brains and eat them too!

:)

It is of course ironic that you are saying this to IG.:guffaw:

:cardie: I find that is lots of money really. In my first career I got about 29500/pa in US-Dollars. In my second career I will get (hopefully, some pay less) about 34000/pa in US-Dollars. And both careers are good qualified with very demanding work and lots of responsibility (social, therapeutic, education sector).
*sigh* But there is just this unfairness again, when a, like it seems not very demanding office job in comparison gets paid about 90000 Dollars per year. Oh, that is frustraiting to read something like that, but still... I love my career nontheless as it is for me meaningful and fulfilling.

However I can see, that it is a problem for you, if you suddenly would have only half the money, as you probably have your life standart now adjusted to the money you have now. Still life is more than money.

your comparison may not be valid - cost of living varies from country to country.. ieven though our dollars have parity at the moment

Ups..I overread Melbourne...you are from Australia and not the USA.... so I should have looked up what Euros are in Australian Dollars and not US. Oh well..if they are on parity...
But is Australia so expensive to live in?

TerokNor

Ah, nothing like the benefit of a full size keyboard..

I don't know what the cost of living is anywhere else in the world so I can't compare. That's the problem. It may be cheaper or it may be more expensive to live in Europe. People that go there for holidays tell me it's more expensive but then again they do all the 'touristy' stuff so they can't compare properly.

In any event, I have two jobs and my combined income from both is about $1,200 / week. This cook position I was looking at was offering $600 / week. WTF

My life isn't about money, but due to some poor decision making in the past I have to earn a certain amount of money in order to stay afloat. Debt has not been a good friend to me.

Wow I was working in retail part-time for three years as a cashier and here I was complaining about that job.
