Starfleet based on an old Cardassian space station? Not really for me.
I remember it more as Trek's first real attempt at arc-based-storytelling, a plethora of interesting secondary characters, a strategic location offering the opportunity to delve deeply into Alpha Quadrant politics, and the most epic war story Trek has done to date. But to each his own.
Which isnt for everyone. One of the reasons I enjoy TNG/TOS/VOY so much IS the episodic nature. It avoided the pitfalls of getting stuck in a dead end story arc, or simply one that particular viewers didnt enjoy. A bad episode in the other franchises ruined a single episode, where a bad arc could ruin several or even most of a season. (ENT season 3 and DS9 season 7 come to mind for me in this case).
Don't get me wrong I did enjoy DS9. But TNG still remains my favorite of the different Trek series.
As for the historical explanation of Worf's stoic nature, I found it interesting but ultimately unnecessary. As mentioned above a persons behavior, aberrant or not, does not have to focus on some single event in their past. Alot of people just break the mold from day one.
