The worst thing is, it's not just squeeling kids who love Twilight. I see older ladies at the local grocery store with Twilight t-shirts, reading the books in the waiting rooms at the doctors etc etc. Who knew the downfall of good taste in society would read so bad !
I work as both a reference librarian in a medium-sized public library, and a bookseller at Barnes & Noble, and at this point,
Twilight has moved beyond its intended target audience. I started to notice it last fall, when a lot of women in their late 30s/early 40s came in asking for the book, and specifically said it was for themselves. Then, in October, one woman requested a copy, because she needed it for her book club. I had an 80-year-old woman at the library complain about the waiting list for our copies of
Breaking Dawn (the fourth & final book).
The audience definitely skews female, though; most of the men I know who've read it are either booksellers or librarians, and they mostly read it because they felt obligated to keep current with what the kids are reading these days.
These things always have an ebb and flow to them;
Trek has certainly had its ups and downs in popularity over the decades. I doubt very many people here would have thought back in May 2005 that just four years later, a
Star Trek movie would have been one of the biggest hits of the year. It'll be interesting to see whether the
Twilight series has any sort of staying power, and becomes popular again 15-20 years after the current hype dies down. I'm kind of doubtful, if only because the writing is so crappy.
