I couldn't agree more, and yes, there were more dignified ways to treat the character than have him some has-been with a chip on his shoulder
I think people forget how brave Luke became. Left his home on tatooine, fought against the deathstar, blew it up. Left his training to save his friends at cloud city, faced Vader, got his hand chopped off. Regrouped, finalized his training, and faced the emperor, all to save his father. He could have taken the easier path. Killed his father, and then the emperor. But he took the force lightning, like a Man, not a whimp, and Vader responded to save his son and the emperor died. Gathered his father up, and returned to the rebellion. Luke freed the galaxy.
Soft spoken or not, his actions were so much different then the way Johnson portrayed him in TLJ. Rey by comparison has less adversity and generally suffers no worries, she can just do anything and no consquences, no explanations, as a proper Mary sue.
Luke being a has been? I would have thought he was the wisest Jedi. Having 30 years to plan, make plans within plans.
The universe of star wars just isn't all about the Jedi. But it does have it's lore in that. The name says it all. Star wars..not a slow chase in space like BSG. The Last Jedi is a poorly written movie. It doesn't portray Luke in a good light and makes Rey the reason he joins the fight again. Makes Rey defeat him in a duel.
You see what they want to do. Kill off the past. Shit on it too. You have to make the new characters cooler then the original and the original owes their victory to the new. Jin Eyrso supposedly..so Luke's legacy is dampened by revisionists and expectation subversionists. I'd have wanted Luke going out like a leader. A general. Not a washed up has been force projection.
Of course I could see them making Luke die to save Rey, with some stupid line like, "you're the future." or some such nonsense just to hammer the point home. Problem is the new characters lack depth, true motivation. And appeal. Just look at toy and merchandise sales. The real money from the movies that's made as Yogurt would say from Spaceballs.
Toy sales are abysmal.
