Is TNG supose to be a kid's show?

No. TNG is a family show, one of those programs which can appeal to all ages. I loved it as a kid, I love it now. True, its adult content doesn't really come in the shape of sex, violence and swearing; TNG's adult content largely comes from the various themes and moral issues addressed on the show. And, candidly, which is the more adult?

QFT. I was 11 when the show started and 17 when it ended, and at different ages I was able to find different things to appeal to me. There were elements I think I would have liked at a younger age (the aliens and the action) and some that I probably enjoy more now in my early 30's than I did at the time (the social commentary).

TNG is one of those types of shows that I wish we had more of today: one that truly had appeal to all age groups.

I was around 9 or 10 when I started watching TNG...well, actually, didn't watch much of it because it was hard to get use to it but I did eventually got the hang of it by the time I was 12 or 13 by catching by re runs (in the summer time that is) during the run). I wasn't much of a DS9 fan when that came around but started watching DS9 fully when season 4 came. I did watch Voyager of course lol

I would say its not really a kids show but some trek fans have started watching TNG when they were around 8 or 9 or 10 at least.

One thing people are forgetting though is that even though TNG did try and deal with adult issues in either subtext or methphor that doesn't necessary make it adult in this day and age. We have talked about how adult drama has gotten more edgy but haven't we seen a evoultion in quality in kid's shows as well? Would everyone agree the gap between adult and kid entertainment has closed somewhat as children seem to become more mature at a faster rate nowdays. I mean you still have stuff like "Dora" but that stuff is for really young children.

But again, Jayson, you're missing the point. By today's standards is TNG less daring? Yes. But so were a lot of shows from that era more than 20 years ago. I think the poster who said it was supposed to appeal to all ages has it right. -- RR

Nah, TNG isn't a kids show, neither are Voyager, or Enterprise. I'd say they're more family shows, aimed for adults, but with little or no objectionable content for kids.
Personally I think there's plenty of room for the "dark and gritty" shows, and the "light and fun" shows to be called "mature" shows.
