Is this the right place to ask about autograph authenticity?

I would say that depends on whose autograph.

A number of ST authors are on here (which is the reason for the strict "no story ideas" policy, to the point where anything that could possibly be construed as a story idea should be spoiler-tagged, even if it's not intended as such). Might be for those specific authors. Probably not for other authors, and certainly not for cast.

There are plenty of authentication services. I used Beckett for the poster in my Avatar. There's always the chance they'll be wrong but at least you have an authority saying it's real for if you sell.

Although from personal experience unless it's a major book/writer/first edition and they've passed, autographs on books aren't worth much. They're too common and not "celebrities".

Unless we're talking 5 figures or more I wouldn't sell it. It claims to be David's first autograph. If it's authentic and he wants to recover it I'd give it to him.

I think you might get better answers if you provided more info. What do you mean it claims to be his first autograph? Did you buy it from a retailer with a certificate of authenticity? If so, is the retailer legit? Is the authenticator legit?

It's not going to be worth five figures. It's not likely to be worth anything tbh. You could always take a pic & tweet it at him, see what he says. That would be the best way. I had Mark Gross authentic his autograph for me via twitter.

Next, if you're worried about it, I'd suggest you post it on Reddit.

Otherwise, like I said before, there are authenticator services but they'll cost you more than the autograph is likely worth and they're still not 100%, more for if you sell for buyers to have peace of mind that it's real, but this likely won't be worth it.

For many years I have bought older zines for a research project. About ten years ago I was leafing through one and I saw, on a page where one of David's stories starts, "To Fiks {I think} Peter Allen David My First Autograph."
I don't really want it to be worth a lot. The comment of five figures was meant to the effect that I don't expect that it will. The point of verifying it, as I said, was that if it's real, and if David would like to recover it, I'd find a way to get it to him. It might make him happy to have it. Or, he might not give a rat's.
