Is This The New Enterprise?

All those toys look to me to be part of a "classic line" as it were since the Enterprise doesn't resemble one bit what we saw in the teaser. The communicator and tricorder also look like over exaggerated versions of the classics since well they're toys.

How soon can you have a prototype ready for a test flight?

Over the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico, people will report seeing strange objects flying weird paths through the sky.

Witness: It was round and flat, bent up at the rim and had a hump in the center. It was a flying sombrero.
Journalist: You mean flying saucer?
Witness: No. Sombrero.

Over the next few months, more and more flying sombrero sitings are reported. Some over the world's capitals. What are they? Who are they? What do they want? The script writes itself.

I agree with this. I'm sure they're being extremely careful about what is seen right now. There will be a variety of toy lines, all to capitalize on the movie in different ways.

Hmmmm.

In this shot:

the Saucer looks very TOS, whilst the Nacelles and Nacelle pylons look very TMP/Phase II. Also, that isn't a TOS bridge

Looks a bit like the bridge in the trailer to me.

I'm just saying.

I agree - it looks like a hybrid of both styles. I also can't understand why Mattel would release Original series Trek merchandise during a movie year where the franchise was being rebooted. I think it would cause a lot of confusion for parents etc.

Since it's by Mattel, then no, it's not the movie Enterprise. Trek XI toys are being done exclusively by Playmates.

Awww. Okay, I'll be there.

Wait, a striped down aerodynamic version

While you're probably right, I don't get why Mattel would change the shape and inside of the communicator so much if it wasn't based on something for the movie. So many other toy communicators look much closer to TOS prop. From what I've read mostly here, the uniforms, ships and props will be clearly Trek but freshened a bit. The communicator depicted fits that idea. We'll see.

Did I read that some of the toy communicators were so good that they used them on screen as the props on ENT later on in the series ? I wonder if these will be that close.

The Enterprise people used the Art Asylum phase pistols redressed as props to save cash. Apparently, the prop department spent $1000 a piece to make new ones. So a $25 toy repainted with electronics already installed was a real cost saver.

From what I've read, Mattel has rights to TOS to make die casts and some other toys. Diamond Select has the rights to just about anything but the film. I'm actually surprised to see Mattel making prop toys since DST is still doing that. I imagine, and this is just speculation, that their prop toys are some sort of electronic interactive thingy used as a game or maybe a control for for another toy. This could account for it's odd shape. Then again, Mattel isn't known for it's great attention to detail or accuracy.
Playmates has the right to most everything movie except costumes and I think some high end stuff. If Mattel is making a movie accurate prop toy, they're probably hoping to do it under the radar. But you'r right, it's too early, and we'll see soon enough.

I read somewhere that the new communicator looks the same as the original but with the addition of a viewscreen, so maybe this pic is fairly close?

I would definitely count on those being the "movie" communicator and phaser we see for the sequences shot in the "TOS" timeframe ( remember, there will be multiple timeframes in this film!). The ships were clearly the TMP/TWOK Enterprise and a crude-ish replica of the TOS one. Whether or not that means that we'll see the TOS and the TMP era ships in this film remains to be seen... personally, I doubt it, but it's possible.

But the communicator... yeah, that's it. And the Tricorder, well, except that the internals in the mid-body seem to be reversed, well, that looks "right" as well.

Different vendors, different design teams... and probably goals for each design team. I'd guess that we're seeing a mix of "new movie" and "classic stuff" items there.

I always assumed that the little deal in the middle of the communicator was a viewscreen anyway.

My logic is this... it's less secure, and more power-intensive, to send multimedia transmissions (assume that you have two or more vid pickups to give 3D imagery). Assume that the device compresses its signal into "packets" which are then burst-transmitted to their intended target (with a "to and from" header on every packet). The amount of data to be sent is far greater with video.

SO... under ordinary circumstance, you use just the audio to conserve battery power and to make yourself as "stealthy" as possible. You'd only use the 2-way video capabilities when there was a compelling reason to do so.

When you're not using it for video communication, it just shows a display of the electromagnetic (or subspace?) field the communicator is picking up... that's what the moire pattern always struck me as. A visual representation of the "radio signal."

I wish they'd have kept the display round (round displays are better than rectangular for some applications... just because we're USED to rectangles doesn't make them better, just more suitable for our current encoding systems). But otherwise, I love it.

And as for the tricorder... yeah, I'm diggin' that too. The phaser looks better still... you'd never know it wasn't a TOS one unless you compare 'em side-by side, but the new one is just a little more sturdy and "real." :)

Of course, the pre-TOS and post-TOS era stuff is all new... and that's more of the movie, so those of you who don't want to see the "same old same old" don't have to worry. You'll only have to bitch about TOS-era stuff for a few scenes. :D

The communicator and tricorder are respectively the radio controller and powerpack for the Enterprise glider. Neither are prop replicas from the upcoming movie.
