Is this Star Wars pic real?

And there's a real irony in the phrase "Yoda looks slightly fake."

If any character there were digitally added, it would have to be Jar-Jar, at least the head. Though maybe that's a sculpture.

I just had a look, and I'm sure he's not a sculpture. Yoda, Jar Jar and Grievous are CGI as far as my eye makes out.

I remember reading that the photos were done in sections, or groups and then the whole thing pasted together. I dunno how true it is, but that's what I recall. So, to answer the OP's question, it's real and a fake! (possibly!)

Makes sense. Magazines do this kind of thing all the time.

I don't know, I've seen some video of Ahmed Best wearing a full Jar-Jar costume, including headpiece. Whether or not they used it much, they clearly had one.
Except in that costume, the "head" was more like a hat - you could still see Ahmed's face.

^Yes. There's clearly no way you could fit a human head inside the Jar-Jar head shown there. It must be either a digital substitution or a model, probably the former.

I was just searching on Google images for Star Wars pics and I saw this-

I've never seen it before. Is it real? I wasn't sure if it was some photoshop job, or if they really got all the actors together. Pretty awesome if it is, but then I just wonder why I've never seen it before.

Thanks

Great photo; thanks for sharing it!

I use a fan-made Star Wars backgroud on my laptop, featuring characters across the entire series; this (mostly) live actors photo makes a nice companion piece to that. I might rotate which one I use if anyone can dig up a clean higher-res version.

Considering how everyone is grouped, and how the quality on the far left is a bit better than the quality on the far right, I'm of the opinion that it's been cropped together from multiple pictures, too. Especially since I doubt Lucas' ego would let him be siting on the sideline like that, whereas he's the center of attention in that segment of the photo.

Well, this was a cover foldout image, as seen in Chris3123's link above. In the original magazine cover, only the far left portion of the image (up to Threepio's right arm) would've been visible before the rest was folded out. So that does put Lucas close to the effective center of attention (a bit left of center of the cover -- and isn't it generally considered good composition to put the most important element just off of center?).

And yeah, now that I take a closer look at the larger image in that link, it does look like the digital version of Yoda, just in terms of the design, though I can't spot any signs of pixelation or matte lines. Jar-Jar looks matted in, though; it looks like his left sleeve and Christopher Lee's right elbow aren't interacting realistically. And I think I see signs of matting where McDiarmid's shoulder overlaps Grievous.

Hayden Christensen looks just as wooden as he did onscreen, though. Portman looks a lot less wooden.

Makes sense it's three or so shots divided up. As if I had all those actors together at one time I'd take a lot of other cool shots as well.
Such as one of the "core six" say of Ewan, Hayden, Natalie, Mark, Harrison and Carrie.
Or one of Hayden & Natalie with their two "children" Mark & Carrie would be funny

Makes me sad that Alex Guinness is missing.

I'm not sure if having him photoshopped in as a Jedi ghost would be touching or demeaning.

Lucas' ego? The dude is fucking terrified of being interviewed. I doubt he'd want to be in the center.

Second Beyond Antares. I remember checking that pic out in a magazine. Now I wish I had bought that magazine. I thought the pic was cool.

I've seen that pic numerous times but what grates me is: Grevious and Jar-Jar is in it but NO Ray Park (Darth Maul)? Seriously?

Annie Leibovitz is famous for many things, including her photoshopped group pictures:

http://jezebel.com/5378098/vogues--november-cover-photoshop-of-horrors

Some are hit, some are miss, but the interesting stuff is a little further down in the article:
Blogger Jeffrey Saddoris has read Leibovitz's book, At Work, in which she writes:
"The picture of Hellen Mirren and Judi Dench in the car was made in two different places. It was fun directing Judi Dench to act like she was talking to someone who wasn't actually there. She was saying, 'You bitch. How could you have done this to me? Why did you do that to me?' And she had that look. If we had been using film, we would have to stitch two frames together, but since we were shooting digitally, we built the final picture in the computer."

It appears that Annie shot the scene in separate composites. She took a shot of January Jones from where she is standing in the video still, THEN after she got what she wanted she moved to the left and shot Jon Hamm exactly positioned and lit how she wanted. Then I would assume she stood back and took some overall shots of the room that would later be stitched together to form the overall piece.
