Is this board 'cliquey'

Camelopard, you forget the PM function. A poster can certainly regulate what goes on there. And you don't think some friends here communicate via email and other instant msg services such as Skype and Facebook? It would be naive to count them as separate from here, because the relationships formed here, can be cemented elsewhere, and carried back in, back and forth, no problem. It's quite close to real life in a lot of ways. Especially since more and more people are taking part in the picture threads, and other personally identifying topics. There are an almost unquantifiable number of factors at play here... almost as much as in real life.

Cliques? I don't know.

But I'm starting a cult if anyone's interested, we really don't have a mission statement typed up yet, still working on that.

ooh I like cults! Will there be Kool-Aid?

Absolutely!

JonathonWally, your avatar seems like a good start: Lens flares, Chris Pine, and all things Trek XI. :D

I have great taste.

Yeah, your check to my clique didn't clear, so Ima going to need to talk to you about "alternative forms of payment."

I'm open to negotiation

yes, yes it is. for one thing there's the clique that finds sombreros on things hilarious. and the miserable gits who don't. and the clique that recognises the Pure Awesome Majesty of Robau. and the shlebs who don't.

I didn't forget that. It's just not relevant.

A PM is not a discussion forum. Neither is email, or an instant message service.

These are the internet equivalents of a phone call. And calling someone on the phone is very different from talking to them in person--let alone a group of people.

It's quite close to real life in a lot of ways.
No. It's nothing like real life, actually.

In real life, people don't sit alone, in their rooms, interacting with keyboards and screens.

Internet forums are a substitute for real-life discussion. And for real life, generally.

None of those bother me...I'm like what-EVAH!!!!

Oh...and the best way to start your own clique is to befriend all the misfits...

So, um...befriend me cos I don't like, have a clique....

LOL!!!

Both. :D

I wonder if those flares would show up on my own black and white number...

O-M-G!!! You've just catapulted that avatar from being nice, to being UBER DUPER friggin' SUPER cool. Thank you so much JonathonWally, you are a genius! :D :D :D

*Skips happily*

I dunno. I think there are older posters who have seen others post for so long that they just get to know that person's posting style, and either in jest, or seriously want to mess with them a bit. It can come across as seeming more mean spirited than intended, especially when groups of posters end up doing it.

On the other end of the spectrum there's new posters, who due to the new film come and post an opinion, which seems just to be antagonistic and because the old posters don't know them, and they don't know the old posters can end up being more hostile (seeming) than it needs to.

I'm sure after years here people have posters they like more than others, so banter a bit more with each other, but I don't think that's so much clique-y as familiarity.
