Is the Star Wars universe stagnant?

Like you said it would have limited market appeal.

Star Wars novels in general have limited market appeal.

It doesn't matter what the current trend of Star Wars novels is. It's only the really hardcore SW fans who are reading the novels anyway. You market to them. Trying to get a SW novel to appeal to the general public is a waste of time.

The technological stagnation is very noticeable, but when you're dealing with technologies like blasters, lightsabers, and hyperdrives that have often been established canonically to have existed for tens of thousands of years in one variation or another, it's kind of hard to pick a point even 5,000 years in the past or 100 years in the future and make it look particularly primitive or more advanced by comparison to "now."

I'd be more forgiving though if they at least made a greater effort to change things up design-wise to compensate for the lack of technological change. There's no reason you have to keep using wedge-shaped starships, barely altered Clone/Stormtrooper armor, fighter that are pods with two parallel wings... As much as I love BioWare's Old Republic trailers, design-wise they barely look different from the ships, vehicles, weapons, and armor we see in the Prequel films and The Clone Wars series:

The Star Wars Universe may not be so much stagnant as it is cyclical. Things may come and go and come back again. Empires rise and fall and then rebuilt from scratch. There is technological progress followed by galactic upheaveals that tears everything down and forces everyone to start over.

A galaxy at constant war could be locked in a vicious cycle of continual progress and devastation with many things having to be reinvented over and over again. Each generation does make progress during their own time, only to have it laid to waste for the next generation. Only the most common and basic inventions survive each age, often being one era's version of something that was created thousands of years ago...

I would imagine technology doesn't advance in Star Wars for much the same reason the Industrial Revolution hasn't happened in Middle-earth.

Well, because it's fiction?

I mean, the Industrial Revolution didn't happen on this Earth until it did...

Who is to say the Industrial Revolution couldn't happen in Middle Earth? We kind of read that story--the Orcs and all of that were some what of a Industrial Revolution.

But, no one would want to read a story about Hobbits being forced to make shoes....

Lucas should have a live action series in the kotor era not between episodes 3 and 4 as he is planning. Like the Clone Wars, putting it between two movies limits things. I know they have the online Kotor game but a series could be cool to.

I'd read a story where Legolas was forced to become a cookie baking elf of the land of Keebler.

I don't think Lucas is that aware of Knights of the Old Republic...in the prequels, dialogue seems to imply the Republic is only about a millenia old. There was that blog post that suggest he's concerned about the money Lucasarts has used on the MMO, though.

^He is, he even interfered with it in one instance. The Darth Bane trilogy addressed the discrepancy between Ben's "for over a thousand generations..." and the PT notion of the Republic existing for a thousand years only. KOTOR happens in the same continuity of the movies.

Well, BioWare likely believes that they'll sell the most subscriptions with familiar designs. Casual SW fans (and even non-fans) most likely want to play characters that look like Jedi/Sith/Mandos/Troopers flying ships they've seen in the films or on TV.

I'd settle for Alien Exodus actually getting written.
LOL

I don't think that people who want Earth as a part of Star Wars lore really understand the term "fantasy".

a long time AGO in a galaxy far far away... I mean c'mon it's how the original movie starts. Having the humans of the Star Wars universe be 'us' from a future Earth is not something I support.

What's the deal with the Star Wars humans? Are they human human, or do they just look like us. Can't remember if they ever mentioned Humans on screen or not.

They are indeed humans, just like us.

Speaking of I really loved the Alien Exodus story. I wish it wasn't canceled so it could be canon.
