Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Universe?

Re: Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Unive

I think there is enough ambiguity in the dialog for many different ways to look at JJ Abram's version of Trek. For me personally what works is that time travel is a tricky thing. The normal sling shot around the sun tends to keep you in your own universe and continuity. But time travel through a black hole or the use of red matter creates time travel that is less predictable.

Therefore I see this new series of films, (which I love) as where Spock Prime and Nero came from the prime universe we have been following for nearly 50 years and traveled to an already existing parallel universe and radically altered that universe.

I believe that also. Unfortunately that's not how Abrams and gang explained it.

What real difference does it make? What is wrong with it being a branching time line?

Entertainment means different things to different people. Abrams put it out, but he doesn't get to tell you how to interpret the material.

If it makes you happy to think that the Abrams timeline always existed in parallel to the Prime timeline, then more power to you. We may not all agree, but we don't have to all agree.

And that is totally fair. Like I said, I like the colors of the bridge, but the controls make little sense. It is easy for me to prefer this over what you pictured above.

Oh, don't get me wrong: aesthetically speaking, I love the TOS bridge, too. It's just functionally, it's damned near impossible.

As for the new control settings like the ones in your link, I love those, because they seem very real, and quite functional. I could see myself learning a system like that.

To my ears it sounds like a traditional time travel method that happens to re-write or erase what happened before. But I think there is enough ambiguity for me to see it the way I mentioned.

I just have personally come to view it as I have and that does work for me. I have zero problem with people seeing it as a branching time line.

Agreed :)

That site I linked to had a couple of different displays, including a shuttlecraft display. Was quite surprised at how detailed and functional that one was :)

Also, if no one knows what the buttons do, that might explain why the consoles constantly explode ;)

My only theory there is that Underwriters Laboratory went out of business. :p

Nonsense! Anyone can fly the TOS Enterprise with the correct training. It's easy to learn - here's the manual (this has to be the most over-the-top Galaxy Quest-ish fanwork ever)

Re: Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Unive

Tech we essentially have in 2015, btw.

Yeah its tech we now have but doesn't make much sense because a window even if it is transparent aluminum cannot be as strong as a bulkhead. Putting such a large window around the bridge is bad design.

Also bad design - Putting the bridge here:

Re: Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Unive

First, many compliments to J.Allen for some funny posts, and great pictures.

Second, when it comes to bridge design we must keep things in their historical perspective. When TOS was created, most complex machines (airplanes, automobiles, etc.) had direct mechanical linkages between the controls and the device being controlled. Thus every command had to have it's own control device, because it did one thing, and one thing only. The concept of "fly by wire", where there is no direct linkage from the control to the device was still in it's infancy.

So the TOS bridge was created in that historical context.
In the decades that followed, direct mechanical linkages were eliminated, and interfaces were simplified, and made more aesthetically pleasing. Thus while the designs of the nuTrek bridge had to "call back" to the original design of TOS, there was no reason to slavishly adhere to a concept that was based on antiquated design principles.

In addition, it is true that officers were required in the days of direct mechanical linkage to memorize a thousand buttons, and even now controlling a massive air craft carrier takes lots of specialized training, but airplane and other complex machinery designers are eager to make the interfaces as simple as possible, as it reduces controller error and makes their products more attractive to organizations like the military that have to train new operators on a regular basis.

The bulkhead didn't make much of a difference when the Scimitar hit the Enterprise in Nemesis.

But it did help when the E-E ran into a space deer. You don't want one of those things coming through your windshield.

Re: Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Unive

Next week, the Enterprise versus the DEER!

Re: Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Unive

Now there's a good point... I'd have to stick labels on top of the buttons so I know which ones to press.

Re: Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Unive

It's the second week of deer camp, and all the guys are here.
We drink, play cards and shoot the bull, but we never shoot no deer.
The only time we leave Spacedock is when we go for beer (Tranya!!!!)
The second week of deer camp is our favorite time of year!

:D

IDIC all the way for me too, the more opinions the better!

However. the biggest problem for me with the "branching time line" approach is that everyone must share the same history pre-2233. This means that all the time travellers from the Prime Universe and all those from the Nu-verse are tooling around in the same year. And not just those from Kirk's century; we have seen time agents from as afar ahead as the 31st century and there's no reason to think the tech just died out there. EVERYONE from two distinct timelines (or more if there is further branching, and why not?) has to share the same patch of pre history, even where it makes no sense to do so (Data's head, for example)

Hence, put me down for a spontaneously created parallel universe, which sprung into existence the moment the red matter time tunnel was formed.

IMO, of course ;)

But they said nothing of erasure.

Re: Is The NuTrek Universe A Changed Timeline From The Star Trek Unive

No erasure happened. Spock Prime's timeline still occurred. I don't know if either he or Nero would have recollection of those timelines if they were truly "erased". I don't really care about temporal mechanics anyway. :)
