Is the navy in Star Wars more "realistic" than Star Trek?

Beyond the cool ship and fire fight factor I guess we are looking for consistancy with the rest of the fictional verse'. I guess for the record Star Trek is more real if we are taking about pre 1918 navies and Star Wars is more real if we are taking post 1938 navies.

You mean Canada has a military? Just kidding.

Seems like they almost got it right, except they kept the Navy ranks.

Not immediately after unification, they didn't. They had those ass-ugly green uniforms *throughout the entire service*, and they had Army style ranks *even in the naval command*. That got changed pretty darn quick.

So they had it right and then they changed it? That figures.

I don't understand why any of you think this is 'realistic' . There's still nothing to shoot at. The idea of armed vessels is ridiculous.

It's all hypothetical, that's why :p Some people like to have these things sorted out in advance ;)

Technically, one could say there could be rogue asteroids and the like to shoot at*, and I doubt some political higher ups (especially those with military background) would like the idea of lab coats being the one behind the trigger on those weapons.

*Though there are other techniques, but for the sake of argument, lets say that shooting is the easiest, most effecient etc.

Honestly, if Humans are ever to shoot anything in space it would be other Humans. Right now, space exploration is lightly manned and mostly automated. We are only a few inventions away from going to space cheaply and being able to exploit the natural resources in the solar system.

In the books by Ben Bova, the Grand Tour universe, humans war over the moon, the asteroid belt, and just plain with each other.

Will there be a conflict with aliens, if one is discovered, Yes.
All ranks are invented for a specific purpose. A General, for example, leads troops into battle. An Admiral is responsible for a group of *ships*. Trying to mix the two would not make sense.
Maybe you could take the time to explain the large naval bases commanded by admirals." It real is just a job title from a certain way of looking at it.

The japanese army during the second world war had it's own "navy", the command officers had army rank, as did the enlisted. Not just landing craft either, crusiers and a few aircraft carriers too. This was largely because the japanese navy and army hated each other.

The starships in Stargate worked just fine with an air force command structure.

Japanese officer rank titles were the same for both services, though a "navy" or "army" prefix could be added when specificity was needed.

The Imperial Japanese Army did operate auxiliary carriers to escort its troop and supply convoys, and also had some submarines to supply outlying garrisons, but no cruisers.

I wish they'd make Jack Campbell's (pseudonym used by john g henry) The Lost Fleet series into a movie... that way you'd all see how a space navy is suppose to act...
