Is the Movie Adaption Out Yet

As of yesterday (5/7/09), both BN and Border's told me that the previously listed 5/12/09 date is a HARD street date, but said that they could receive updates to release today 5/8, at any time.....

Has anyone read it and can comment if it's worth a read...

I was told it would be out today last week when I asked in my local Waterstones so I had a look in there over lunch and it's not yet.

Aw Well, I never actually planned on getting it till after I've seen the film which is tonight

My copy has just been unpacked at Galaxy Bookshop, Sydney. An email notification to go in and collect it has just arrived!

I got a copy early thanks to the largesse of my local bookstore owner. KRAD he (Foster) ain't and it is aimed toward a very wide audience. Buy it to have it on your bookshelf or to read this summer on the beach when you are needing a Trek fix that is fast and fun.

Picked it up yesterday at Chapters here in Kingston, Ontario. A quick read, but does add more information/background to many of the movie's key scenes/events.

That's kind of you to say, but I've got a looooong way to go before I'm fit to black ADF's boots. He's been doing this, and doing this very well, since I was in proverbial short pants.....

Can you give one example? I was sorta hoping that the novelization might add a bit more detail that was lacking in the film.

My B&N has given me the same date, the 12th, though I wouldn't be surprised to get a call from them tomorrow.

SPOILERS BELOW

Two examples:
-Additional dialogue/background during the Spock Prime, Kirk, Scotty scene on Delta Vega
-A great scene between Kirk, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu, and McCoy on the bridge after Spock steps down as Acting Captain. Kirk, who has assumed command, tries to convince the bridge crew that they can trust him. He proceeds to tell them about this conversation with Spock Prime. This leads to a neat discussion about alternative realities, parallel universes, etc.

I would say that ADF either:
-added dialogue in many scenes
and/or
-he used the shooting script which was different from the edited version of the movie.

Some discrepancies/differences as well (this list is not intended to be exhaustive):
-When I saw the movie, I assumed that Nero transported Spock Prime to Delta Vega approx. a day before he destroyed Vulcan. Spock Prime is then seen witnessing the destruction of his home planet during his mind meld with Kirk. However, the novelization refers to Spock Prime visiting the Starfleet outpost on Delta Vega several times in the past to obtain food, supplies, etc. which indicates that he has been on the planet for some time.
-The novel also refers to Kirk as "Lieutenant Kirk" which I don't believe was ever said on screen
-At one point Uhura is left in command, which makes much more sense than leaving 17 year-old Ensign Chekov with the con (which was done on-screen.)

That definitely must be from an earlier draft, since the movie makes it clear that the Narada's destruction of the Klingon ships -- which would've been during Nero's escape from Rura Penthe and thus before he encountered Spock Prime -- was only a day before the attack on Vulcan.

I was actually able to snag this at a Coles last Tuesday (the 5th), but I don't want to read it until after I've seen the movie... which unfortunately probably won't be until the week of the 18th at the earliest. :(

My view is that the book was written useing the orginal shooting script because they needed the thing done for the orginal december 08 release date. Meaning that the fall and winter redits never get into the book version of the movie

Picked up two copies tonight. I was accidentally spoilerized re the final paragraphs the other day, so I simply had to read that bit on the way home. Smirk.

Well, two opposing reviews are up on TrekMovie.com. Mine and John Tenuto's (who listened to the audiobook). I felt it was a bomb, he felt it was great. While I really enjoyed the first third of the book, I felt most of the rest of the book added little of value to the story, stuck too closely to the script and that the additions after the first portion of the book were so marginal as to be, well, marginal.
