Is the Federation a "cashless" society or not?

This thread is really making me think that it is kind of a shame we never saw any of the shows really take a deep dive into how the Federation actually works as a society.

I'm not sure that's really the best idea. I mean, trying to portray a utopian society runs the risk of portraying something that wouldn't really work as advertised. Maybe it's best left to the imagination.
