I am not referring to the Abrahm-averse. Which no doubt will live on for a while.

I mean with regards to the "Roddenberry-Verse" I.E the mainstream continuity.

The Final episode of Voyager, which in many ways was the end of an era was almost exactly 12 years ago, which just seems crazy.

The finale of Enterprise was 7 years ago.

I do realise that there were issues with Voyager and Enterprise, and ratings problems which lead to cancellation, life support and eventual "reboot" on the big screen, but for a show with such a history, fanbase and legacy, surely it's too valuable to call time?

Me personally, I would be looking to resurrect the show for TV in 3 years time, the Tenth anniversary of Star Trek's TV "death"

With 10 years gone, surely that is enough of a hibernation, TV effects have come on leaps and bounds, and the Trek fanbase is STARVING for new material.

Sci-Fi and fantasy is in a resurgance, Look at Game of Thrones, the Walking Dead etc. I see no reason why a well-written Trek, with quality TV actors couldn't be a hit. There must be ideas stacked a mile high somewhere.

What do you think, is there any chance? Or is one Abrahms-Verse film every 5 years all we can hope for?

TV effects have come on leaps and bounds

Have they?

and the Trek fanbase is STARVING for new material.

Really?

There are always "Star Trek Online" game and tie-ins, IDW's comics (including crossovers with "Infestation" zombies, "Legion of Superheroes" and "Doctor Who"), and the current Pocket novels' "The Typhon Pact" arc and a return of USS Voyager to the Delta Quadrant.

ST will no doubt return to TV at some point, the question is more when and in what form. Remember the gap between TOS ending and TNG starting was what 18 years?

Yes they have, go rewatch any episode of Voyager, it looks pretty ropey.

With regards to new material YES there is aditional material particularly the excellent novels BUT it doesnt make up for a lack of TV.

I just dont see any reason NOT to attempt a new series in the near future

With the lack of them probably developing new material, expect a half assed return shortly after something better and similar somewhere else comes along that is profitable. As for now. you couldn't get it away from JJ and his greedy hordes with a megatron bomb. Just sayin', especially if it continues to make a slight profit.

QFT.

There'll be a new Trek series on TV again, and it'll have as many gushers and bashers as all the previous ones, regardless of what form it takes.

Trek almost certainly will return to TV one day - but I seriously doubt it'll be a return of the TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT continuity. It'll probably be a(nother) new start, with Kirk and Spock.

The only place the old Trek lives on now is the monthly novels, which have continued the stories of the shows, and seen the characters through many changes (Riker and Troi have a daughter, the Borg are gone, the Typhon Pact has allied the Romulans, Gorn, Tholians and others against the Federation in a cold war, the Slipstream drive has made the galaxy crossable in months) which I very much recommend.

I don't think it holds up too badly. What would they do differently now, except render everything in High Definition?

I don't know if TV Star Trek is done, but I think I'm done with it. Enterprise soured the milk in my case.

At least having TNG season 1 in HD gives me an excuse to watch it again.

The existing backstory arguably lives on in Spock Prime, but other than that it's pretty much done. Any new TV Trek will either attempt to capitalise on recent movies or take a new and bold direction while staying true to the show's roots.

You're right, but i'd love another tv series set in the prime universe during the tng/ds9/voy era

I have no doubt at all that a new TV series will arrive. Just a question of when.

I imagine the movie studio is probably against the TV studio from doing anything, as to not distract from their success. But the TV studio will want in on it at some point.

The merchandising machie si going crazy at the moment - it's like the good old days the amount of crap coming out. I think the whole franchise is reawakening.

Where would it sit though? I think UPN has moved on. CBS could be an option - but it would need to be way more mainstream and command viewers to survive on there. SyFy is too rogue and doing their own thing, can't see them being an option.

So where to house it will be the biggest challenge.

I think we definitely need a second successful film before we have a new "franchise". A one-hit wonder isn't going to lead to any spin-off series or a new universe. That said, I keep hearing good things about Star Trek 2, so here's hoping.

Then again, who knows whether the studio wants to do TV again? Abrams strikes me as the kind of director who (like Nolan with Batman) might want to do three self-contained films as a trilogy and then put his contributions to bed. The sort of guy who wouldn't want a series compromising dramatic integrity while there are still films to be made, stories to be told :D

I think if there is to be a new series, it will likely be after Star Trek 3, some time between 2015 and 2020, provided the fan base sticks around.

I voted "slim chance" simply because I don't want to give up hope.

Realistically, GR Trek is dead on screen. JJ Trek is the shiny new toy that is getting all the "play".

It's too bad, because I really wanted to see a "rebuilding of the Federation" series set just after DS9.

If it IS to happen, it will be only when CBS sells the rights (unlikely) or a new studio head that isn't a sci-fi hater like Moonives is put in charge.

I think that there'll be a reboot of TNG at some point. Other than TOS, it was the only Trek series to reach mainstream popularity.

Paramount auctioned off all the costumes, sets and props. If they revisit that era, absolutely everything has to be remade. More likely, they'll change the setting to a new century.

We are? I take it you were not around during the ten year period between the end of TOS in 1969 and the advent of TMP in 1979? I was born one year into it, but remember the latter part of the decade quite well. Compared to that time, Star Trek is alive, well, and going strong.

Will it make money for the studio and network?

Star Trek was originally a vehicle for a person to get his and some other talented writers' stories told. He found a studio that needed such a vehicle to show it was a major leaguer.

Now it's a "franchise," a name and set of characters that can, from time to time, be assigned to people to create content/product to maximize shareholder value.

you realize that TAS was during that period, right?
