Is "No Limits" essential NF?

Wow, necroing a thread that had no posts in more than a year for "info" that has been posted here in March already ( http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?p=10861591#post10861591 )? :vulcan:

Just followed that link. I hadn't been into that thread since... September 2013? So that post was older than the thread I "necroed". Still going, sure, but I never seem to go there.

Tonight I had conducted a search on the term "No Limits" and this thread was the only one that came up. (I did note February, and hadn't actually flinched at the 2014, probably because it's hard to believe we are well into 2015.) Pardon me for missing the announcement of the German cover. I was on vacation in March and totally missed the news. If it was new to me, an avid "New Frontier" fan, then it might have been new to others.

I have been criticised before for starting brand new threads with info others consider repetitive. I figured I was making a right choice. Is there a stated ruling on old threads? I thought a year or so was still within the rules? I thought I was bringing past posters discussing "No Limits" some information they might not know.

If it's so wrong to "necro" a thread, even when on topic, why can't dead threads be automatically set with a "no new comments" setting? (Starting a brand new thread on an old topic does not give new posters any of the old questions and answers.)

Nothing wrong with bringing this thread back (in my humble opinion), and I for one appreciated the news! Very cool cover, thanks for posting.

@ Therin

You´re right of course. Saying Cross Cult´s covers are always better is over-simplified. It depends on the character. I remember Calhoun to be the most discussed on their Facebook page when it came to outward appearance.

And don´t forget the notorious Khan novels that are about to be released in the next several weeks. They polarized, too. All in all I prefer characters over bland and drab covers.

As to M´Ress: I never watched TAS. But M´Ress´ head seems to be too big for my liking.

I also liked the German Worlds of DS9 covers (they made six different shorter novels out of the two-story books), except Kira, she looked odd and not at all like Nana Visitor. Same goes for Picard on the German Q & A covers, he looked "egg-headed" IMO. Overall I appreciate new covers. At least we can discuss about it.

So, I haven't gotten around to reading all the NF novels. I've only read the first two chap books and Cold Wars and that was years ago. Last month I obtained a used copy of the Omnibus of the Double Helix series. Is the NF entry accessible to someone with only a passing familiarity with the series?

Should I read the "No Limits" anthology now or can I skip ahead to "Stone and Anvil" without any trouble?

I'd definitely give it a look. None of the stories are essential to understanding the plots of the subsequent novels, but they're each interesting character pieces that give readers more insight into why the characters behave the way they do. As others have mentioned, the Kebron story is probably the best of the bunch, although I also really enjoyed the Calhoun (which also features Sirol from "The Pegasus") and Mueller stories.

Now that I think about it, the Mueller story does (kind of) tie in with the events of Once Burned, but it's not required to understand that novel if you're planning on reading it.

I think so. Both Riker and Picard play decent-sized roles, so you can follow them as viewpoint characters. Some of the ongoing soap-operatics may be lost of you, but the plot ought to be clear.

Thanks. NF looks like a fun series, but I just haven't had time to get into it. I did enjoy the NF entry in the Gateways crossover.

The German NF covers are definitely better. Releasing the NF Gateways novel, but not the other Gateways novels is beyond me, though.

I disagree they are "definitely better". I really dislike the Calhoun they depict on the German covers. The US model (a neighbour of artist Keith Birdsong) is the Calhoun I imagine when I read the books.

Years ago, when I was reading one of the books with Calhoun on the cover, my mom noticed it sitting on the table and picked it up and looked at it, and she asked me, "Is this a book about Bashir?". Like me, she was a big fan of the shows, but unlike me, she could never get into the books.

Yeah, Double or Nothing is essential to NF, but the rest of Double Helix is not essential to Double or Nothing.

Yeah...when I originally read NF a million years ago, I skipped the "Double Helix" book because I didn't want to read that whole series, and I missed out on something pretty damn important that had consequences later.

You wouldn´t mistake the German Calhoun for Bashir. ;)
