Is modern society far too competitive?

Digressing, people are hyper-competitive because that's what they were raised to be. I worked a sales job for 3 years, and all of management are Type A's with either a superiority or inferiority complex that motivates them to push themselves extremely hard in a belief that they have 100% control over their life. It's kind of interesting to watch from the outside. From the inside it's f'ing hell.

Really, all problems with modern society can be traced back to the evils of management. What do they TEACH in business school?

Not nearly enough ethics and philosophy. Not that either of us should pretend that any of that would really sink in. Most people go through the motions of college just to get the diploma and learn nothing aside from how to play beer pong at a competitive level. Little actual knowledge is learned, which is why most of those manager's are idiots without the ability to do basic math, despite the fact that finite math and/or econometrics were a required part of their major.

Funny, I never drank a drop of liquor and I remember everything I learned. Too bad no jobs realize that and offer me a job.

Pie eating I could see being fun, but hot dogs? Seriously? It just encourages bad eating habits, and it's gross.

Gross? I know someone who won a pie eating contest. It wasn't a fake whipped-cream pie either. It was a cherry pie eating contest. Do you have any idea where cherries end up after a contest like that? She was snorting them out for 5 minutes afterwards.

I wasn't saying pie-eating was gross. I was saying hot-dog eating was. You took it out of context.

I don't think you quite get what I was saying. I know you didn't say pie eating contests are gross. However, your statement is the implies that pie eating contests are somehow less gross than hot dog eating contests. I explained a fact about pie-eating contests that you're probably not aware of, which might convince you that both are equally unappealing.

There is a Top 10 List for Farmville? Seriously? I had no idea, and I actually play that game on Facebook.

Now granted, I didn't get into it for any sort of competition. I got into it because some of my old friends from Alaska play it, and they asked me to play with them for the cooperation aspect...and it seemed like something silly and fun to do with old friends.

But I was not aware of any competition and Top 10 list related to it. And if one exists, it is sort of meaningless, given that your 'success' at that game is in large part due to the people you play with.

Well, if that's the case, then I'm sorry. I apologize. That does sound pretty gross. In any case, I think any eating competition is gross, and like Sarek mentioned, quite wasteful. For the price of organizing one, you could probably send quite a bit of food to countries in need.
