Is Khan really Kirk's greatest adversary?

Way back I believe there was a suggestion of putting “no smoking” signs on the bridge and elsewhere on set. The idea was nixed because they wanted to convey the idea no one smoked in the far future and to avoid any inkling of product placement.
Huh? Never heard anything about such signage outside of TWOK.

Also, there's a difference between not showing people smoking and putting on-screen signage that might offend sponsors. And Trek had tobacco company sponsors.

I’m pretty sure I read something about this way way back. Or it could have been nixing an idea of putting ashtrays on the Enterprise. The bottom line was GR didn’t want the characters to be seen smoking onscreen.

The way I heard it, this was Nicholas Meyer trying to put some grit and realism in TWOK. He also insisted on the wall-mounted fire extinguishers.

I can't believe that Khan is even in the running for Kirk's greatest adversary. At the very least he should be well behind the nigh invincible planet eater and the million mile wide life draining zone space amoba - surely?

Hmm… I’m pretty sure I recall reading about this back in the ‘70s, long before TWOK. I might try to look it up.

While the fire extinguishers seem to make some element of sense (we don't have a great track record with automatic fire suppression systems in Trek that I'm aware of), the "No Smoking" signs are a bit silly.

I think their looking for a Lex Luthor not a Sun Eater.

I'm reminded of Spock coolly putting out the small fire caused by his overloaded circuit in City on the Edge of Forever.
