Is Ken Follett a trek fan?

The reason I ask is that something caught my eye while reading Pillars of the Earth. The line is this:

"You'd better see the jailer. His name is Odo, and he has deep pockets."

Now, it could very well just be a coincidence, but part of me would like to think it's a nod. I mean, two entirely different characters with the name of Odo, both of them running jails? What are the chances? Or is the name Odo more common than I think it is?

Ahh well that makes sense since it is historical fiction. Then it seems more likely that DS9's Odo was named after that. Interesting.

I've read that Odo (DS9) was named after the odometer label on car dashboards. That may be apocryphal though. If not, it would make me laugh quite a bit since, as pointed out upthread, Odo is a proper, if obscure, name.

I think Pillars of the Earth came out before DS9. Pillars came out in 1989 and DSP came out in 1993.

Props to reading Pillars, though, awesome book and the miniseries is a servicable rendention to the book.

Yeah, I'm enjoying it quite a bit, and I actually read World Without End before seeing the Pillars miniseries. That said though, I agree it's a good rendition and I don't really see the hate that people have for it. World Without End is being adapted as a miniseries too.

I think you're right about when it came out, however, it's quite interesting how both ended up jailers as their profession. It does kind of deepen Odo's character on DS9 quite a bit knowing that though even though it might be just of a coincidence.
