Is Joe Flanigan the worst scifi lead actor ever?

Joe Flanigan, wasn't really even the lead for "Atlantis." That was proably who they thought it would be, but the show's star was oviously Rodney McKay. With that said I thought he was a solid actor and a good character. He and McKay had chemistry which worked well for the show.

Worse than Joe, there are probably 100s but here's 10 of my picks

1 Paris Hilton (probably humps Producers to star in movies)
2 Steven Segal (wooden)
3 Kevin Sorbo (Hercules, Andromeda etc)
4 Xena Lawless (basically typecast herself as a dyke who gets into bar fights)
5 Arnie (no debt, no acting talent but he's brains got a weird charm about him)
6 Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Culkin)
7 Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Emo)
8 Shaquille O'Neal or any Rap stars...Shaq was in some superhero scifi it sucked
9The guy from the Highlander movies (French accent)
10 Sylvester Stallone (another muscle head)

Enjoyed the hell out of the Shepherd/McKay interaction, thought it was one of the better duos in scifi history and that the show was smarter than most these days.

I'd say the only scifi lead currently that was clearly better is David Tennant on Dr. Who, and he's being replaced by a teeny bopper here shortly.

Honestly, what scifi shows have particularly strong leads in the last ten years? It's almost all been ensemble. In Trek you have to go back to Sisko, I'd say Browder was in Farscape. Other than that?

And I concur, so much of it is the writing.

I've never watched any of the SG series but I think Kevin Sorbo's performance in Andromeda would take some beating for the title of worst scifi lead actor ever.

The reason McKay became more of a "lead" was because David Hewlett is a hell of an actor. I don't think Flanigan's really *bad* (definitely not the *worst*), but Hewlett's lightyears beyond him.

Flanigan isn't what I'd call great, but certainly there have been worse:

Kevin Sorbo - Andromeda (lulz)
Scott Bakula - Enterprise
Michael O'Hare - Babylon 5
Richard Dean Anderson - SG1 (once it turned into full camp mode)
Milo Ventimiglia - Heroes (if he counts)
Hayden Christiansen - Star Wars Prequels (lulz)

I'm sure there are others, but that's just what springs to mind.

I liked Flanigan quite a bit. And while I have a ton of issues with Stargate Atlantis, so much so that I eventually stopped watching, it's still a better show than 24.

I liked O'Hare but he was an acquired taste. I initially thought he was wooden but now I regard it as gravitas - much the same as Avery Broos in DS9.

I didn't like Bakula in ENT but I don't think he's a bad actor. Just all wrong for that part. I saw him recently in Boston Legal and really liked him in it. The part just totally suited his strengths and he was quite charming in it.

Haven't watched any of RDA in SG. Ventimiglia was adequate in season 1 of Heroes but the series since then just seems to have demanded that he run around with that silly sub-Stallone lip curl thing he does (which presumably landed him the role of Rocky's son in the last movie).

I think Christensen is also a decent enough actor, he just played Anakin the way Lucas wanted him to, which didn't suit a lot of people's expectations.

Heroes had one non-crappy season, which is more than all of Stargate can say for itself.

*looks at watch* Yep, right on time for Temis and her Stargate bashing.

We GET IT. You don't like the show. Why do you feel the need to constantly let us know this post after post after post?

I always got the impression she watched it as kinda popcorn tv. No substance but just fluff and fun.

Anyway, as to bashing SG, I think there'd be more of a case for bashing it than not.

Wasn't Joe Flanigan pretty much just playing Jack O'Neill 2.0? I wonder why they didn't go the Kirk and Picard route and made the main character completely different from the original show.

If they wanted to make the main military guy in SGA different from O'Neill in SG-1, they could have based him on O'Neil in the original movie.

*cough* Kevin Sorbo *cough*

With regards to Andromeda, Sorbo was also one the worst scifi executive producers ever.

Hey, Kevin Sorbo was awesome.

I wouldn't want him to win any emmys for best acting, but he had an undeniable charm that made Hercules amazingly fun to watch. He was also pretty good as Dylan Hunt in the first season before the show went to shit.

How could I have forgotten that!!! :rommie: Milo is only second worst of all time.

Best lead actor in sci-fi: Matthew Fox on Lost. He may not be the most likable character or, if gossip serves, person in real life, but he's unquestionably a pretty good actor. Gets overlooked a lot because there are so many better actors on that show.

Flanigan was one of the best things on SGA

Flanigan was the only good thing about SG:A.

Because responses like yours are soooo immensely gratifying. :rommie:

Nah, I watched it:

1. For Flanigan
2. Desperation factor: not much in the way of space opera on TV.
3. Responses like the above. :rommie::rommie::rommie:
