There's no denying that tonally Seasons 1 and 5 are polar opposites.
In fact 1 season arguably isn't enough to judge the series.
I feel like everyone involved in the show really did try and it achieved some level of competency. It's not a She-Hulk or Acolyte situation, despite what some fans say.
For this TOS fan - The first two seasons (especially Season 2) , yes.I've been reluctant to watch Discovery since... well, since I was made aware of its existence. I've heard some pretty bad things about it, but I've also heard people only hate it because it's new. I've recently been considering giving it a try, though. Is it actually any good/worth watching?
I think the problem was that the show was holding the torch for the entire franchise for awhile and everyone thought it was falling way short. But if you don't try to force the entire legacy of Star Trek on it then the show really is just a better version of Andromeda. So in that context, it's fine. That is true.
As much as I generally dislike Discovery, it's in absolutely every way superior to She-Hulk and Acolyte.
Among my biggest gripes of Discovery is just being bad Star Trek. Take that out of the equation and it's more of a underwhelming, generally poorly written genetic sci-fi show with some good characters who are unfortunately consistently overshadowed by one particularly bad one.
But... Discovery is watchable.
I can't say the same for She-Hulk or Acolyte. I did manage to finish She-Hulk... I got three episodes into Acolyte before hanging it up.
That's not exactly a high bar. And I say that as someone who liked EFC for the most part.Is it better than Earth Final Conflict, Andromeda, or other shows with Roddenberry's name stamped on them? Uh, yeah.
WRONG.No. It's absolutely godawful. It gets marginally better by Season 3, but the main character really drags the whole thing down and the show never relents on making her absolutely insufferable.
WRONG.
I think it's a fascinating show in certain aspects. The fact that DSC went through so much turmoil behind the scenes really shows up onscreen in the way the first few seasons were plotted.
I do wish it had started 900 years in the future, with the Federation dead and Starfleet a legend. A show about rediscovering the past and reforging everything over a span would have been really interesting.
It is what it is though.
I like the characters and the overall design, but it doesn't really take off for me until Season 3.
They even could have used the same gimmick - a ship from the Golden Age of Star Fleet arrives in the future, and finds the ruins of Star Fleet. There could be some great mystery boxes while they figure out what happened. Then you can go in two directions - how to go back and stop it, or how to fix it from here on out. (Ironically, that is a choice that the Terminator movies have an issue with, as well - is the point that they need JC to save them after the bad future, or is the point to go back and stop it from happening?) That could have been an interesting philsophical discussion to be had, tbh.
