Is it to late for a "Free Enterprise" sequel?

I think most people know this movie. It's is basically the second most famous love letter to Trek and Sci-fi only being beat out in fame by "Galaxy Quest." It's basically "Swingers" with Trek fans and it created the idea that you didn't have to be a nerd to like Trek. It also stars William Shatner playing himself. It even predicted how big laserdisks were going to become before they replaced the vcr tape, forever in the mind of all.

I think it's too late. We're talking about 20 years now, as hard as that is to believe. I love the movie, but I think the audience of people who have even heard of it is small. The lives of these characters are not such that we are left wondering what they are doing now.

I love the movie, I enjoyed it, and if there is a sequel, I would gladly see it, but who would pay to make it now? Where's the money?

Maybe in 25 years if mid level movie stars can attain an similar status to cult TV stars Chris Pine can make a remake.

I love the movie, I enjoyed it, and if there is a sequel, I would gladly see it, but who would pay to make it now? Where's the money?

I wonder if a Kickstarter could get it done. The fact that Shatner is still alive and I asume would be intrested in doing it I think would make it a little more possible. I think Shatner playing Shatner has a timeless appeal, to even those who might not know of the first movie.

I have supported several crowdsourced film projects over the past ten years. Only one was actually finished and made it out to the public. Crowdsourcing only leads to disappointment for the contributors.

And despite the financial success of the reboot films, I think the time for something like this has passed.

Free Enterprise was a fun film, but why make a sequel. It rejuvenated Shatner's career. But why can't it remain a single story that can be enjoyed on its own terms. What is showed was that nerds can be pricks too. And we've learned that lesson on this very board. Many, many Trek fans have never really understood what Trek is actually about.

It does work well, even if you don't have a sequel but the fun in having one I think would be to show the difference in fandom from back then to how it is today. I asume the internet would be used more and you can do stuff about the rise of comic book movies/shows. Also the JJ Abrams movies would factor in somehow since classic Trek was such a huge impact on the main characters. I actually think the fact that so much time has passed actually makes the sequel even more appealing than if they had done one, closer to the original fan because if they did that, they might have felt the urge to sort of just repeat the first film. Having Nimoy in a sequel does sound like a great idea though and makes it even more sad that they didn't get to do that story.

I don't want a sequel; that implies some kind of connection to the original, which was very much of its time. I'd rather see an entirely new film that would be the Free Enterprise of its own era. Which, however, is not quite yet. If Discovery does really well and generates buzz and new fans, it could come out of that. The other option I can see is a satire on the whole fan film scene, but that's a lot more niche, and anyway it couldn't be as funny and over the top as the real Axanar saga.

This also sounds pretty good though I think I would focus more on this being the era of reboot's and comic book movies over fan films or even combine the idea. Maybe you got two guys who want to make a film. One wants to remake "Batman vs Superman" the right way and the other guy wants to make a more gritty and edgy "TOS."
