Is it so certain?

That there will be another movie?

Everyone seems to be convinced but is it inevitable?

Yep, the sequel was greenlit by Paramount at the end of April. As far as I know, the writers are already working on the script, hoping they'll have the draft ready for Christmas. JJ Abrams will be producing but it's not sure yet if he'll also be directing.

Well, at this point it makes more sense to assume that there will be a sequel than to assume that there won't.

Paramount seemed very pleased with the financial success of the movie, Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof are already writing the next script and are expected to deliver it to the studio by Christmas and all significant actors from Star Trek XI are contracted for another two movies.

So the question is: What could prevent a Star Trek sequel?

(The movie may have not title yet, but it already has a IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1408101)

What I'd like to know is why it's said the movie will be out in 2011. It will take at least two years to make, and they haven't started yet.

By the time they get started, two years will put them at another Christmas release, which they clearly don't want to do.

So, why isn't it supposed that it will be 2012, around May, like this one.

I agree, 2011 is very optimistic. Could happen, but I suspect 2012 is possibly more likely.

Two years isn't unlikely at all. Looking at TMP through Nemesis, here's the breakdown of the 9 gaps between subsequent movies:

2 years: 5 times or 55%
3 years: 3 times or 33%
4 years: 1 time or 11%

So, actually, having a 2 year gap between movies has historically been the most common outcome. The studio would have an incentive for doing that in order to build on the momentum.

It's all about money. If the studio feels it can make money (and based on this movie's result, it surely can), there a sequel is indeed inevitable. Timewise, since a lot of set and prop are already build it may save on production time and allow a tight 2 year release.
