Is it possable to have a reading addiction?

Re: Is it possible to have a reading addiction?

All in all though, I'd rather be addicted to reading than writing. Those writing types are some pretty sick people.

Re: Is it possible to have a reading addiction?

^^If reading is an addiction, I suppose that makes us dealers. That would be a disturbing thought, except that reading is an addiction that's good for you. (Unless you walk into a signpost.)

Wouldn't that actually make you drug manufacturers? Book shops and sites like Amazon would be the dealers.

For me, not so much anymore ..... but that's mostly because I've been buying a few seasons of DS9 on DVD and watching those over the past few months.

The only Star Trek books I've read recently are "Warpath", "Resistance", "Before Dishonor" and "Greater Than The Sum". I'll probably get "Fearful Symmetry" and Destiny book 01 sooner or later.

Re: Is it possible to have a reading addiction?

I can't do that myself. The way that the ground and stuff around me moves, but not the book really screws with my head.
Stop reading after a night out then ;)
 It's probably a good thing I don't drink, because then I'd really never be able to read.

And also good for you since it helps pay the bills and, essentially, allows you to continue to deal to us.

Someone also mentioned better to be addicted to reading than writing, and while I agree, writing is also a great thing. Writing short stories (30-40 pages) is a great outlet for me.

Addiction to writing... hmm... it would be nice to hear DRG's opinion ;-)

Re: Is it possible to have a reading addiction?

I must have somewhere around a thousand Star Trek books by now. And several thousand books that aren't Star Trek books. I haven't read them all yet, though.

Same here.

I am SERIOUSLY addicted to reading.

Wait, that's not a bad thing is it?

So long as it doesn't get in the way of the rest of your life.

Oh..and don't be one of those people that walks and reads. That's just silly.

Okay. I'll read from my wheelchair. That's easier anyway.

Not to mention more relaxing.

Re: Is it possible to have a reading addiction?

I am in addicted in phases. Sometimes I tear through several books a week for several months at a time, to reading a handful of books in a year.

These days I am in my one or two books a year phase. I'm just too freakin' busy to sit down and enjoy a book and other things occupy much of my free time.

Its like being in my own personal Dark Ages, or something.

I'm not addicted. I can quit anytime I want.

Oh, wait... Margaret reads this board, doesn't she?

Turns out I can't quit just yet....

I have several trek books (I'd say around 100) but sadly havent read too many of them. My friend on the other hand has SEVERAL hundred that he gets from libraries when they have sales and stuff and I know he reads all the time. I dont think a reading addiction is a bad thing though

I read constantly. I reread Star Trek novels multiple times, and then when I'm done, I get rid of them.

Right now, I'm figuring what I plan to do with my next batch of Star Trek novels I'm getting rid of.

On the other hand at least the library is an available option for the reading addiction.

Thank God other people read and walk-I was starting to think I was some kind of freak!:rommie:

As for the question of addiction-does 4000+ books qualify?:wtf:
Seriously. After my kid was born I started getting irritable. I thought it was lack of sleep. Then I picked up the latest S.M. Stirling and the first Mirror Universe TPB and tore through them between diaper changes and feedings(ok, during feedings) one Saturday. Suddenly, my child was much cuter(if that is possible), my wife prettier and all was right with the world. So I said, "The hell with sleep!" and started staying up after the baby crashed to read. My home is much happier now.

I've donated 1000s of books to the library, yard sales, and goodwill. I finding myself often looking for new material to read, if I wasn't on the computer now, I'd either be sleeping or reading.

Reading while walking has been interesting, I usually don't run into things.

I may not read it every day but I'm always in the middle of reading a book. I can't help myself.

Me either. I'd rather read than talk to people. It's far more productive, and less wear on my blood pressure and patience.

I went through a readaholic phase a few years ago. Right now I'm in a sleepaholic phase though. Stupid school.

Haha!! Thats where I was til school started stressing me out, now I'm a readaholic again and jumping out of my skin for more of the DS9 relaunch- having read Warpath and FS about 100 times... theres even more anticipation and questions now! I'll be done school in December- what am I going to do to partially distract my mind til I get another novel?

There should be a drug for this... :shifty:
