Is it okay for people to live together before getting married?

I knew i could count on you. The data I saw was different but I trust the census data more. No wonder half the country is losing their minds, their kids have gone crazy. Gay marriage and polygamy are just around the corner. You sir are correct and the tide is turning.

Yep, great isn't it :)

I lived with my wife before we were married.

I was raised in Oklahoma, pretty religious, not so much now, but enough that I felt compelled to hide the fact that I was "living in sin" from my parents. I just didn't want to hear about it.
Not to mention it adds the "naughty" factor

Me and the wife had the opposite problem: We ran off and eloped and had to hide it for several weeks cause her family (Big devote Italian catholic family) wanted a traditional wedding. After about a month, we finally came clean cause we just couldn't keep up with who knew and who didn't and it was getting to difficult to dodge her family's questions.

Are you talking those who are "fighting to defend the sanctity of marriage"?

Well the group that wants their country back. When you think about it, there is probably about half of the country that the values, traditions, and ideas that they grew up with and have held all their lives are being totally done away with. That is definitely a scary thing.

As we can see in my circles the idea that family has been tossed aside by so many is troubling, especially the women that I know.

Who has 'taken' their country, and where did these invaders come from if it wasn't their country in the first place?

They're being told they can't impose closed minded bigotry on others? :wah:

In other words, these people are afraid of change. This is the same attitude people had about women wearing long pants, showing bare skin (arms), women in the workforce, children not having to work in factories, people no longer farming as a way of life -- the list goes on and on. Change is the only thing that stays the same, and it seems the people you reference don't understand that. It has occurred through all of history, and there is always a group that fears change and cries out that all is lost and society is doomed.

I don't see how the idea that family has been tossed aside. We can discuss what a "family" is in another thread, should you want to start one or the Mods prune our remarks. You will be in for a real eye opener.

They're free to hang on to their values and traditions until the day they die. Which, on average, is likely to come rather sooner than that of the folks whom they decry.

Well the traditional family that most people are still born into (except for my group of course). I am not even going to touch what a family is. I think I will just pass on that one.

Maybe I should pass on all social issues on this board. It is a pretty much do what you like, kind of place, except when someone does something you don't like.

I can see not a shred of anything negative in your post.
It's a good thing things are changing.
No one needs a stagnant society.

As for the original question: Yes, very much so.

What's a traditional family?
A mother, a father, (who married out of love) 2 1/2 children, a dog and a picket fence?
THAT's a fiction that sprung up in the second half of the 20th century.

Why quit while you're behind? I think there might be one or two people left who who haven't falsely accused, offended, or insulted.

Or you can get in one more parting shot...

It is a pretty much do what you like, kind of place, except when someone does something you don't like.

There isn't a roll eyes big enough for this. You want to live in the 50's? Fine. Keep your wife barefoot and pregnant, and gays in the closet. Better yet, have them arrested for being gay. And while you're at it, would you like segregation back, too? Ah, the good old days of good old fashioned American values. This country isn't going crazy. We've already been there.

Well the group that wants their country back.

Correction, it isn't just "Their" country and every other citizen of a nation has every equal right to be involved in the direction their country is going, like everybody else. The majority of the nation don't see things your way?

Oh well, that's democracy for ya.

So just because they were there first, their way of life should be the one everyone has to follow?

Tell that to the Natives. I'm sure they'll respond with something like this:

 where is all of this coming from? I thought I gave my opinion on marriage. Only on the Trek BBS could I of all people be considered a Conservative. Man that is rich.

Thanks folks I needed the pick up today. :bolian:

Ok someone start a thread on what a family is. I am interested now.

Social conservatism is a political or moral ideology that believes government and/or society have a role in encouraging or enforcing traditional values or behaviors based on the belief that these are what keep people civilized and decent.

Do you want me to quote more of your posts, or has the point been made?

If you mean the folks who don't like the idea that 'the mongrels' are finally getting what they want, and that people actually wake up and see that the old values are not that great to begin with.

Not everyone wants to be married, have 2.3 kids, a mortage, white picket fence, a gas guzzeling SUV, PTA meetings and company picknicks. That so-called American Dream is more of a nightmare to me. More like a brainwashing to keep all the lil tax payers in line. :p

Those people who want 'their country' back are often angery, middle aged or elderly folks that can't seem to realize that the 50's...that even the 80's are gone.

Social Conservatisim: Where they wanna rule you like a king.

Not that I said any of those were my views, but that would basically make our President a conservative too, but that is what the rest of the world thinks of the United States after all.

What would you have us do - live a lifestyle that we don't want and are not suited for? What good do you think would come of that?

I would make a poor husband and a really bad father. I have no interest in committing myself to a single partner for life. I can't stand kids for the most part and I would view a child as an incredible imposition on me.

Have you ever considered that the reason there are so many people "cheating" on their spouses, getting divorced and doing a poor job raising children is that those people felt pressured to live a lifestyle they didn't want out of pressure to conform?

Actually I always say that. People often get married when they shouldn't get married and most people marry the wrong person. There are too many people that have children and are poor parents.

But as Darth Tom likes to point out, studies show children do better when they grow up in a two parent household with loving parents. The fact that we are moving away from this is what concerns me and others. Like I said in my community it has always been like this and it has not been a pretty sight.

Wonderful. American Values always wins in the end. :bolian:

If you are most concerned about children being raised in a two-parent, loving environment than you should promote lifestyle-tolerance. The number of children born to unsuitable parents would probably drop if people were not being pressured into a lifestyle that is not for them.
