Why couldn't the purist take the new Alternate Timeline the same as the situation with Japan's Star Trek (Mobile Suit Gundam). They could still enjoy Universal Century, and still know that AU's exist for Gundam.

I think it's a resistance to change, or that there is a feeling that stories could still be told within the Prime Timeline regarding the beginnings of the TOS crew and not need any changing to the timeline.

This is true...and people obviously have a lot of affection for the original timeline...so just try to be patient with people...I think most will come around eventually....but it's just gonna take time.

The problem is that "Canon" isn't limited to dramatic plots but to all that affect the universe, including laws of physics and quantum mechanics. It is already define in several canon-considered on-screen episodes of TOS, TNG and VOJ that time travels create alternate timelines. In fact, all possibilities exists in their individual reality. Rejecting this is rejecting the existing canon and that would make you fools, not purists.
