Is it just me, or is Star Trek going the wrong way?

-Gul Dukat's daughter being murdered
-Vulcan being destroyed in the Kelvin Timeline
-800 million Cardassians being slaughtered by the Dominion in the closing hours of the war
-"Brain and brain, WHAT IS BRAIN?!?!?"

Similar recipe. ;)

No, I disagree about the last one, and it can be kept out of the equation solely because it was from a bullshit episode that had no business being written or made, and which some people have tried to spin as it being some kind of (un-ironic?) comedy.

As for the lighthearted episodes of the various series (and Lower Decks), it shows that Star Trek can laugh at itself and not take itself seriously, which is a great thing.

I think it's fine. It's been successful, different, and exciting. It's not flawless by any stretch...but it's also not trying to rekindle the glory days of 1991 either, and for that I am grateful.

I think the "Star Trek always explored things" perception is way over-done. Star Trek was actually not often about exploring anything. Most of the plots were about:

Rescue missions / distress call response
Patrol and Police actions
Diplomatic missions
Time travel shenanigans
Enforcing / being an instrument of Federation policy
War / combat / pew-pew

The parts I emphasized in bold exactly are the ones done in this fan-created Star Trek 'series' (check out the one lady character in particular who's a 23rd century version of a member of this Earth-based organization from the 22nd century.)

I saw it topped a poll of "least disliked" Disco episode on that show's forum (albeit with a handful of votes), so at least you're not alone.

I'd have had it at the top of most disliked, but that's IDIC!

That warranted a recount.

I've said it before, but I just want a sequel series set on a Federation starship in much the same way TNG was a sequel series to TOS. I'm not saying the TNG formula would work in 2021, just the same kind of idea as they had in '87.

And no, I don't think season 3 of DISCO counts.

Yeah, DSC should have been a post-NEM series to begin with, a follow-up to the late 24th century Berman series and even a 25th century sequel. Setting it 10 years before TOS just opened up too many minefields and the creators were far too late rectifying some of the problems.

I fully agree. The first half-season could have been a sequel story with few changes. The unconvincing prequel status always got in the way of my enjoyment.

That said, the sudden jump to the far future only made things worse!

Somehow DSC works so much better in the late 32nd century than it ever did in the 23rd. Season 3 was the best to date and pound-for-pound had the strongest episodes as a whole. Which goes to show that the actors were never the issue nor the characters. It was when the show was set and the writing, and once they freed themselves from the confines of the immediate pre-TOS timeframe they really started to emerge as a good Trek series and one that didn't have four mediocre or bad episodes before getting to a great one.

I never had a problem with the setting. It was a blank canvas to me.
