Is it just me or did civilian clothes improve from TNG?

some the outfits Sisko wore actually lloked like something I might wear in the present day. Jake's outfits got better as he got older.

I think you're proving that civilian clothes DIDN'T improve, but got worse.

Would you wear an outfit from 300 years ago? Probably not.

So why does Jake wearing clothes that look like something from 300 years ago (his perspective - ie, if you would wear it, it's modern to you) work better for you?

Just saying. :)

It's retro chic.

Haha, google search the clothing worn 300 years ago. I don't think retro goes that far back. :)

In their defense, it was a 1970s planet re-enacting The China Syndrome. Didn't those shirts or colors also resurface in "Favorite Son"?

The civilian clothing looked better in Deep Space Nine as they were somewhat more believable. Jake Sisko's latter day look of dark coloured waistcoats and patterned shirts is timeless.

Man, I wish I was around the trekbbs in 2011! People actually had a sense of humor!

Classically, the mullet was "business in the front, party in the back." In the 80s, a well done mullet was a thing of beauty. A poorly executed one was hideous, a thing to be shunned and ridiculed. The term has come to represent the latter.

As for clothing, there are a lot of styles that we all wore in our past and wish we could erase. Unfortunately these fashions always come back to haunt us, worn by young folks who tell us how cool they are now and how uncool we were then.

Mark my words: The mullet will return. And it will be embraced by those who will ridicule their parents who ridiculed it before them.

This.
TNG tried maybe a bit too hard to get a "futuristic" look that may have looked a bit silly, but at least they made an effort. There was a conscious desire to try and imagine what people could wear 400 years from now.

DS9 just gave up after the first few seasons and pretended everyone somehow wore 1990s clothes. Just like they didn't bother too much with the Bajoran priests who are just wearing slightly updated medieval Japanese clothing (right down to the hats)... Strange coincidence for a planet that had no contact with Earth until the 24th century.

I thought the outfits looked 90s in some ways. The outfits were shiny and had lots of blues and purples.
I hated when Dukat had to wear them in season 7. I liked the military uniform much better.

Of course DS9 improved the civilian clothes from TNG. They had a number of episodes in 50s suits and fedoras. That is the pinnacle of fashion!

Jake's clothes looked awful, but some of the Bajoran and some of Sisko's outfits were tolerable or even attractive.

Jake's clothes looked awful
Jake's and Wesley's clothes were probably based on some late 80s child development theory that oddly shaped clothes with many colors were good for developing minds. The theory might even be correct, but it certainly looks fairly awful!

Exactly!! I'd say Jake has awesome late-teen and especially adult fashion. He's pretty hipster.
