Is it fair?

And they do count DVD and rental sales toward recouping
a movies budget.

No they don't. And a 67 mil on a 60 invest leaves you 60-120 mil short.

The lack of profit 67million brings a 60million production may be true.
But they most certainly do count both DVD and rental income to help
recoup budget. Especialy in a case where the box office under performed.

So many times you'll read something like; "But they hope to make some of
it back in DVD sales..." etc.

Yeah, but not as a theatrical motion picture profit, which is its own thing. That is why they have separate homevid and theatrical divisions ... note I mentioned how the movie dept can write off a theatrical failure and still get profits on the other part from ANOTHER division. It is still a failure. if it were adjudged a success on that basis, they'd have to pay out to everybody who has a net profits deal, and studios hate to do that. That is why it took so long for par to pay anybody on TWOK, where they couldn't even hide the profits of the theatrical end of things, because they don't want to admit profit -- hell, Paramount was saying TOS was still in the red in the late 70s or early 80s, and that is utter horseshit.

I'll be happy to go into more detail with you on this later, like Tuesday, but I actually have tons of home stuff and a writing project to do and finish today and tomorrow.

I remember reading that studios looks at dvd sales and rental when it comes to recouping money successful and unsuccessful films. If I find the webpage I read it I will post it. Its true that the studios don't get 100% profit from any film in theaters but from dvd sales they do

It doesn't matter to me one way or another whether or not they were a part of the franchise before XI. As long as they showed up and gave their all while on the job.

Also, I think we would be boxing the franchise in creatively and talent wise if there was a Star Trek prerequisite before allowing them to appear in movies.

They don't count toward the Box-Office, no, they do continue to count
as profit for the film, and they always collect it up to make up for losses
from the film. Yes, Nemesis was a monetary failure.

Not much to discuss, I've spent plenty of time researching and paying attention
to this stuff.
