Yeah, it's definitely different. Having a personal hardship beyond "someone died and I miss them", like all your identity is wrapped up in them alone.

Rene Picard wasn't well-developed because he was a child and hadn't definitively become who he would be. David Marcus was an adult and had more time to develop his personality, goals, and ideas.

Fatherhood takes a bit of a beating on the first two Trek shows.

Kirk. Absentee father. Meets his son, then loses him.
Sulu: Seems like a good dad, at least in the Kelvin timeline.
No other TOS characters are parents.

Picard: really bad with kids until "The Inner Light", which provides a 25-minute crash course. Never has children, though.
Riker: Good father, but doesn't become one during TNG timeline. And loses 1/2 kids.
Data: Good father to Lal. But loses her. Loses 2/3 kids in fact.
Worf: Deadbeat dad half the time, not great when he's there.
Geordi: Did not have kids in TNG timeline.

However, then came DS9, and fatherhood made a comeback. Sisko, Rom, and O'Brien are all great dads, and their kids all survive. Worf is still not so great, though. The more things change...

To be fair to Kirk, Carol Marcus told him to stay away.

I am not excusing the fact that he didn't try (at least, no on-screen evidence of it), but he did abide by her wishes.

We are also forgetting about Tuvok, who seemed like he would be a good father.

Also Tom Paris, based on how he was in "LINEAGE"... I feel he would be a good dad. Just the fact he is accepting of who she will be is better than a lot of parents out there.

I didn't mention Voyager because I'd have to mention Tom, and he was all over the place. Abandoned three offspring in "Threshold", but seemed like a good parent in "Before and After". And I'm sure he will do right by B'Elanna and Miral, too.
