Is (guess who) a (insert something) Sue? (Spoilers)

Is Yoda a Baby Sue?

  • Yes

  • No

  • Of course not, there's a perfectly established canon precedent

  • Well, isn't this a turn around?

The Jedi powers are so easily defeated sometimes, that they are almost like Star Trek transporters. When a shuttle needs to crash for story purposes, "atmospheric interference is making transport impossible!"

At the same time, that is what they are giving us to work with.

Anakin was a great pilot as a child even winning a pod race which is supposed to be impossible for a human to do, and does it with a sabotaged pod.

And a lot of viewers hated him, including for being annoyingly cutesy-perfect.

I perfectly understand the point. Luke and Anakin are both good at a lot of shit in little or very short periods of time. How exactly is Luke keeping Vader from reading his mind in "Empire..."?

"Obi-wan has taught you well..."
Yup. Rey is all highly similar to Luke and Anakin in different ways. Major difference is she lived in an environment where she didn't know if she would get her next meal and had to fight to survive.

I get that Tatooine isn't the nicest of environments, but Luke and Anakin had least had consistent care in their lives.

And Watto - though a slavemaster - at least took care of Anakin and Shmi and provided them with some pretty spacious living quarters stocked with the bare necessities of existence. Anakin may have been a slave boy but we never got the impression that Watto beat or otherwise mistreated him or his mother(the slave control implant that could be triggered to explode notwithstanding).

Indeed. I get that being a slave is terrible, but Anakin and Shmi had it OK, in terms of housing and food. Anakin is even able to built his own droid and pod while being a slave.

Again, slavery is bad, but Anakin had it OK.

I've always been a little uncomfortable with how casual the Star Wars movies are with slavery.

The Republic was a dying, corrupt system that tolerated far too much both within its borders and outside them. I can believe that slavery existed outside its borders because the Star Wars galaxy has hardly presented itself as a bastion of progressive thought.

The idea that the prequels existed to show us corruption within the republic, and even the jedi is a good one, and very interesting. Unfortunately Lucas keeps denying that this was ever his intent.

Indeed. It's not great.

The Republic was just Rome. Rich in decadence of the leadership, while struggling to combat corruption. The Jedi Order embodied stagnation as well, failing to recognize the needs of its members, namely Anakin, but even before him, 20 others had left the Order.

It's your interpretation of those events which have been repeatedly discussed. They have been shot down, but they keep coming back up. Doesn't make them correct.

In other words, just because you have silenced me doesn't mean you have changed my mind.

Mileage will definitely vary. However, I do think this is also a perception thing too.

I think Rey is far more of a survivalist than Anakin or Luke ever had to be. Her hardship occurred for longer and more off screen. Doesn't mean she didn't have a hard life.

And as I said a while ago, she can be compared to people who've survived conditions on this planet from this other sci-fi franchise.
