Is (guess who) a (insert something) Sue? (Spoilers)

Is Yoda a Baby Sue?

  • Yes

  • No

  • Of course not, there's a perfectly established canon precedent

  • Well, isn't this a turn around?

If it was a dude it wouldn't be worth commenting on. Exhibit A: The Mandalorian.
I already brought up the mandalorian.. so making a simple argument without baking it up is just dumb.

Also, talking about the comments above about Rey;s mind trick of Daniel Craig.. not only was it completely asinine that she could do this because not only was she never trained for it nor had even seen it performed before to know it was even something she could do, I might still like the scene if it wasn't for the funny "tag" at the end.. I'm sure "JJ "pat myself on the back for my ingenuity" Abrams loved the bit where she asked him to drop his gun too, but you need to at least have a clear mind when doing the mind trick, and considering the =obvious adrenaline rushing through her having been freed (you can see it in her giddiness) her mind was definitely NOT clear when she asked him to drop his weapon.

This might seem like a little detail.. no big deal.. but it's the combination of the broad strokes AND the little details that create the verisimilitude that helps us believe in this unbelievable story.

Works well enough for me...for reasons repeated ad nauseum.

The rest of the arguments about mind tricks and all that are filled with presumption and assumption about it, so it's not worth commenting on. It's pretty much clear that the mind is made up and no argument is of interest to actually enjoy the movie.

I guess I should tell you I do enjoy parts of the film. Overall it looks great.. I like the fact that it was filmed on.. film. Ridley is really good in scenes by herself. As an action scene the first flight of the Falcon works.. mainly on it's own.. more critical about how it happened.. but on it's own it's fine. A few other scenes are really quite good. But overall the script just doesn't work.

Nice to know there is some enjoyment to be had somewhere...sad that it basically felt forced out...:(:sigh:

I think he is above Krennic but Voss takes the cake for me of the newer villains. Extremely slick and smooth villain, with that barely contained rage that is so fascinating.
I love that. But what makes it really work is that he acts all chummy first.. like you are my best friend .. but if you know him at all you would not cross him.. you are always on your guard even when partying with him

He is very intimidating. I also liked how he tried to bargain with Han as things went south. "Han, this is a good time to re-assess our relationship"

For all the things I don't like about the new episodes, films like Rogue One and Solo (which is filmed and paced like an Indiana Jones film in space) are so fun to watch.

You know what always gets me about these "Mary Sue" arguments? It's that people always seem to conveniently forget the most significant defining quality:

The guy's name was Luke. Short for Lucas.

I brought that up a while ago, that definitely is some insertion/alter ego/wish fulfillment. And yet even in the first movie Luke isn't the only cool, or even most skilled, character and then in V and VI Yoda is very critical of him are critical of him and there's the possibility he could go bad.

Neither is Rey. She is wide eyed, naïve at times, impulsive in ways that are reminiscent of Luke and Anakin.

I certainly think there is a possibility of Rey going bad, because the need to belong is so strong in her.

One could even argue that if she hadn't so greatly overestimated the power of Force Skype, the last act would have played out much differently and the resistance would be in a much better place.

For folks who claim the original trilogy was "planned out" from the beginning...

Wouldn't it be interesting if she turned to the dark side and Kylo Ren fought to stop her?

Very much so yes. Back before TLJ came out, that was my idea. That the final battle of the middle chapter would have taken place on the island with Luke and Kylo facing off and Snoke and Rey doing the same. Snoke convinced Rey to come to the dark side and Luke tried to sway Ben back to the light. As Luke wins the moral fight there, he loses the other battle and then loses his life as Rey runs him through. She and Snoke go off together as Ben sits there in his grief as Leia and the Resistance arrest him. The third chapter would have involved Ben Solo facing the loss of his mother (obviously came up with after Carrie's passing) and having an uneasy truce with the Resistance to win the day and bring Rey back to the light.

But no one asked me, so what can you do? :p
