Is DS9, a true Trek show?

Whatever one would think throughout its run, in my opinion it exceeded some aspects of Roddenberry's dream by the end of the Dominion War: the top three rivals of TOS -- the Federation, the Klingons, and the Romulans, were all united against a common threat and forged an unprecedented alliance in Trek history. Peace reached even bigger heights than ever before.

Excellent observation, Cyke!

YES!

Good Point! I never looked at it that way.

Wouldn't this question be more appropriately asked in General Discussion, outside the Niner's natural habitat?

It has the most rewatchability next to the Original Show and gains new fans every year while TNG loses them.

I'd like to see some proof that TNG loses fans. And for that matter why does another Star Trek have to be bashed in order to praise DS9?

I'm not bashing TNG so don't get your knickers in a twist.(and by the way, I like TNg, just not as much as DS9) I'm just stating that DS9 has more popularity now than TNG has. Do a poll here sometime and see who wins. DS9 has won the last oh....10 or 12 that have been done here. This is a site devoted to star trek fans so I think it's a pretty accurate depiction of star trek fandom. And if your worried about bashing then you should take issue with the thread title.

I don't think this is true. This site isn't a reliable indicator for the popularity of the shows. So while you might be right that DS9 wins most polls for favorite series on this board, I don't think that speaks for it's general popularity (it just happens to be this way on this board). Most people still think of Captain Picard and the Enterprise when the think of Star Trek. And after all, this is how I define popularity. Also, I still don't see how TNG is "losing fans".

And mind you, I say that as a Natural Born Niner™. :rommie:

I'm just curious. Is that avatar of yours from the new remastered series in high definition? It looks so much more life like.

^ :rommie: Wow, what a deviation! No, it's from the old TOS DVDs. I just do a lot of manipulation in Photoshop to bring out the best in the images (generally more contrast and more sharpness). But thanks, I take that as a compliment. :)

Guys...I don't see how ratings numbers or shows winning or losing fans has anything whatever to do with whether DS9 is a 'true' Star Trek show.

If you want to give us REAL reasons why you thing DS9 isn't a 'real' Star Trek show, then by all means present them. But ratings is not a reason.

If ratings were a reason to judge a show not a 'real' Star Trek show, then TOS, which was CANCELED for poor ratings (in it's day, when there were only three networks), isn't a 'real' Star Trek show.

So how about we stay on topic?

As well you should...looks great. But I thought you were against the manipulations of TOS for quality improvement purposes. ;) :p

 I know you mean that tongue-in-cheek, but that was actually NOT my point in the other thread. I'm all for an improvement in picture and sound quality. But I'm against the addition of new effects and new music just because the audience is used to something better these days.

Sorry, PKTrekGirl, for derailing the thread again. :alienblush:

Okay, something on-topic: DS9 rocks! :D

Despite its attempt to be more than another TREK show, DS9 ended up being . . . just another TREK show. So yeah, it's a true TREK show.

I realize that most TREK fans view DS9 as something more original than the other shows. My problem is that the series had failed to live up to its promise. It still remained a good show, but I don't think that it had failed achieved to become something more original.

NCC-1701..glad you recognized I was just razzing you. ;) I understand what you meant in that other thread.
I'm not as good at analyzing and describing why it is DS9 is my favorite Trek series as alot of folks here able to so eloquently. Although admittedly, I've consumed all Trek except Enterprise. Gotta save up to buy the DVDs.
However, of everything I've seen, I still find that DS9 had me sucked in sooner, held me more consistently and it's the one I enjoyed the most from deep in my bones. It really was the pinnacle of Trek superawesomeness for me. My wife and I agree on this, and it's made for some really nice evenings watching DS9, which we're in the process of doing now (we're up to re-watching Season 4 right now) and we're having a blast. Definitely Cool and the Gang. Amazon had some great deals on sci-fi DVds last month...(like 50% off) and I took advantage of it to buy our own set. It might even still be going on. I was borrowing the Seasons from my buddy last time we watched DS9 and Voyager.
What can I say...I'm definitely a Niner. I just can't really pinpoint exactly why.

^ Boy, I hope someday I'll meet someone who watches Trek with me just like your wife. As George Michael put it best: Celebrate the love of the one you're with, Rabittooth!

And I know your dilemma: I can't pinpoint why exactly I love this show so much either. I guess it's just the mix of it: Good drama, wonderful actors and that special DS9-ness. ;) I think in the end it's not THAT important if it is "true" Trek or not.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... Let's not forget that the third season of TOS was originally broadcast at 10pm on Friday nights. It was set up to fail.

I believe that DS9 isn't just Trek, but it is the BEST Trek, especially after TNG, which was overridden with sappiness and hollow self-righteousness.

Oh man...you have no idea how grateful and lucky I am. :techman: She's a great lady, smart, beautiful, funny, we're the same age, she's into Trek, LOTR, Star Wars...the works. She's a great Mom for our little one and she's practically a chef!
I'm just glad we both "waited" around to find each other. Started to think it was never gonna happen to me. We were 34 when we met. Married after only dating 3 months.
When you find her...you will know.
