I agree with a lot of people here. I think Axanar was aiming to be a Professional Level Star Trek Production with State of the Art Production Values... and that's exactly the problem with it. If you want to do that, pitch to CBS/Paramount. Then they can accept it or reject it. But it's theirs, not the fans'.
The TOS Fan Films, I can see why there was more leeway considering that there was no new Star Trek on TV for 12 years and it was '60s style Star Trek. CBS/Paramount are never going to make that type of Star Trek again. It wasn't butting up against something they might actually want to do.
Axanar ruined the fun for everyone. They took the concept of "fan film", a.k.a. "amateur film", and went way too far with it. And, if you're not an amateur, then why are you bothering with a production like Axanar? Make something that isn't intending to be Star Trek -- so you can make a mark of your own (whether or not you make it big is beside the point) -- or try to get hired on the production team of DSC (even as a Production Assistant) or one of the Abrams/Tarantino Films.
My opinion on this is more than objective, especially considering...

I sprained my eyes from the amount of eye rolling due to every single supporting character saying something along the lines of 'That Garth though, that mad Izarian, he was brilliant' every 30 seconds.
