Is Cryptic Studios alienating Mac Users?

^^^^
Its not helped that in the media, Macs are always shown to be the tool of choice for the teckies and 'cool' people (with the occasional appearance of a Dell or Sony laptop!). Apple are really good at marketing.

Mac's are the ultimate "image" machines. When any car will do, why buy a Jaguar? When the grocery store is closer, why drive the extra mile (in your Jag) to go to the farmer's market? For the same reason you buy a Mac.

I currently own and have always owned Macs. I freely admit it was a choice born out of tribal thinking (I'm a graphic designer) as much as desire, though I don't fetishize them, have never had a latte and do not own a Loft. There were much better PC's available for the price I payed, but when it comes to working I just feel at home in OS X (I always have the PC as backup, 'cus you never know). I've never looked at it as a game machine though and whenever I try to, reality smacks me in the face with a bag of rocks.

Even if Cryptic did release a Mac version of STO, most likely the majority wouldn't have the specs to play it well (you know, the way they advertise it will look). Kitting out a Mac is a pain in the ass and for gaming is practically impossible. So, of course, when it comes to gaming I'm most assuredly sticking with PC's.

But yeah, with a 3-5% of the worldwide share the only reason anyone is creating any software for the Mac is because of their popularity in America. It's really kind of funny when it comes down to it, because they are seen as being quite popular here, probably more popular than they really are and definitely more popular than they are in other parts of the globe. Macs are really what amount to niche, luxury products aimed at a couple of very specific types of computer user. One of these types is not "16-48 male who buys 6-20 video games a year and upgrades his computer every year or two to play the latest and greatest things".

This is the definitive answer to the OP's question. It would cost more money to port the game to the Mac than it would recoup in sales. Only a complete moron would go ahead after being presented with that math.
