Is CATSPAW the worst episode of S2?

When I see these threads discussing the finer points of all the various episodes, I have to wonder how perspectives would be different if this were the way things were in the 60's with regards to episodic TV. In other words, you might see the episode once when it ran the first time, possibly once in a rerun, and then that's about it. Just thinking that would probably leave a different impression than the 500th viewing...

The 'worst' of the pile for TOS had little to do with the dating of the pieces (with the possible exception of "The Way to Eden") but more to the 'this is a television show, not fiction!' mindset that occaisionally pops up and smears it's poo-covered monkey-hand all over the production. These episodes stunk the first time you watched them, and manage to STILL stink (thanks to afore-mentioned poo-covered monkey-hands) 40 years later.

"We need the show done NOW, you think too highly of the audience if you're worry about how this bit of dialog is going to sound! They won't care!"

it's got some touching characterisation, particularly between McCoy and Spock ("he should have wished me luck", etc.). I'd go far as to say it's easily one of the best episodes in the whole series.

As my wife would squee, it drips with "Sp/Coy".

Too many nominees on different grounds: "Friday's Child" for Most Boring, "Patterns Of Force" for "Most Dull-witted/Literal/Heavy-handed," "The Apple" for "Most Relentlessly Thoughtless And Cliche-Ridden..."

Honorable Mention to "Wolf In The Fold" - Robert Bloch phoned in a horror story complete with seances and demonic possession built around his favorite hobby horse, "Saucy Jack."

As Mankiewicz said, "There are millions to be grabbed out here and your only competition is idiots..."

I like Catspaw, but that may just be nostalgia from my childhood talking. I still enjoyed it when I watched it again some months back.

I keep threatening to write a sequel to CAT'SPAW. One of these days . . .

Call it DOG'SASS, because I'd rather stare at one of those than watch the original ever again.

Joe, catty

Like I said in another thread, it's STAR TREK--with witches and a haunted castle!

What's not to like?

Plus, those little pipe-cleaner aliens at the end are really freaky.

The pipe-cleaner aliens are about all that this episode has going for it. Some of the dialogue is great. Oh, and the bit where Kirk matches the pose of the skeleton.

Otherwise, I'm just amazed I didn't doze off. Definitley in my bottom 10 of all Treks. Do you think that might have something to do with the fact that we, in the UK, don't "do" Halloween with as much gusto as y'all in the States?

Despite the cute cat, I have deep rooted contempt for "Catspaw". As a joke episode, it failed. I'd gladly rewatch nearly every other one mentioned in this thread before sitting through "Catspaw" again.

No, plenty of us Yanks think that episode sucked too.
“Patterns Of Force,” for “Most Dull-witted/Literal/Heavy-handed” . . .
Come on, how can you hate an episode that has both Kirk and Spock shirtless and getting whipped?

I usually refer to it as “Cat's Pee.” Or a few other excremental terms.

I actually like Catspaw,I see nothing wrong with it. However there is one episode in peticular from season 2 that I think is the worst from that season. And that episode would be Assignment Earth, I think its the worst one from that season. I loved all the episodes from that season except that one, it just didnt make sinse to me.

it was a pilot for another show with Star Trek tacked on.

"Catspaw" could be a winner in the worst episode of TOS, let alone season 2. It so sooo bad (how bad is it, Buckeyenation?)it almost makes TATV look simply bad instead of vomit inducing.
