Is anyone else sick and tired of unlockable content in games?

In my opinion, GTA4 represents the absurdity of achievement points with the "search the entire map for 100 pigeons and kill them all" achievement, but I'm not going to hold it against anyone who goes for it.

^ There's a big difference between a massive open world that's an entire city (with a lot of pointless dead areas) and a pretty linear game. :p

^ Yeah I know. ;) Though I have a feeling most people actually use a guide. Which kind of defeats the purpose. Which I guess is one of the reasons a lot of people dislike trophies like that.

"Completing" a game doesn't mean getting 100%, it means reaching the conclusion of the game's story.

That's a matter of opinion. I consider a game completed when I've done everything that can be done. As was pointed out, not all games have a story, so your point doesn't really work in that regard.

On multiplayer: people will always find a way to disrupt it for other players if possible. Achievements are not the cause here. Do you seriously think in your Soccer game example that people would stop exploiting a bug if the achievement wasn't there?

Exactly. MW2 has no online-based achievements, but that didn't stop people exploiting the care package glitch. Nor does it stop me getting messages every other day from arseholes inviting me to their boosting lobbies so they can cheat their way to 10th prestige.

i decided a few weeks back i don't care if i never get every single achievement on MW2.

I got the 1000G on MW2 a while back. It was pretty tough, especially doing those later Spec-Ops missions, but again, it gives me a sense of acievement that I managed to complete the challenges the devs laid out.

I never got the 100 pigeons on GTA4, but I did get all the flags on Assassin's Creed, and all the feathers on AC2. Without a guide.

^ I didn't bother with the flags in AC, but I did get all the feathers in AC2. I used a guide to find a few of them at the end.

God, I did the flags and feathers in both games (with guides). Even now, I don't know why I did it... I suppose traversal in both games were relatively easy going though, so that helped..

^ I hated doing the flags in AC, but it was gratifying when I got that last one. I wasn't going to bother with the feathers in AC2 at first, but it got to the point where that was the only achievement I had left to do to get the 1000, and it would have been more annoying to leave it incomplete.

What's worse is that I missed one of the "chat with Lucy" events in the first game so after I finished the second, I went back and redid the entire first game just to get that and the flags. Then there's the fact that the official guide was just wrong at points and it became an aggravating experience... and something I wouldn't have done if it weren't for the whole 1000/1000 thing.

So maybe it really is all an evil ploy. :p

I played AC on the PS3 before they introduced trophies, so I didn't have the 1000G Devil sitting on my shoulder, encouraging me on.

^Would you care to show me the post where I demanded that everyone agree with me ?

I'm stating a personal opinion, not carving commandments in to stone.

Er, I already did so. You basically told Servo that he's playing games wrong because he's not using your definition of completeness.

If that isn't what you mean, then maybe you shouldn't construct posts in such a way that make it appear that you're confusing your opinion with facts.

^So, basically, everyone has to say 'in my opinion' or 'I think' before every sentence.

No, it's usually pretty clear in context. I don't think I'm the only person reading your posts that way considering the reaction you're getting in this thread.

I hate unlockables. I only finished a game last night that I bought two years ago. I finished the main game then left it, I only bothered to go back and finally unlock the final level because I was bored. It gets seriously tedious retreading the game minutely to get something thats not worth it or unlock what should be accessible from the start.

I stated my opinion, backed it up with reasons and answered questions about those opinions when asked.

The reaction I'm getting seems to stem largely from me praising one aspect of Guitar Hero over Rock Band which people have taken as a general endorsement of one franchise over the other, which couldn't be further from the truth.

And then you went and told people that they could only possibly be having fun if they play games the way you do and use the definitions you want.

Look, straight up: your definition of what it means to "complete" a game is wrong. The criteria that need to be met for a game to be complete not only vary from person to person, but also vary depending on what the developers intended. If you don't like that and are unable to derive enjoyment from games that don't line up with your expectations, well, go play other games.

A significant number of people clearly do enjoy achievements and it's a shame that their enjoyment appears to offend you somehow.

No you didn't. You told me that completing a game meant finishing the story, not completing the game 100%. I quoted that opinion, and countered it, and you didn't even respond to it.

As has been mentioned on a number of occasions; not all games have storylines. How does something like Flower, or Wipeout HD figure into your reasoning here?

^I didn't tell anybody anything.

Erm...

"Completing" a game doesn't mean getting 100%, it means reaching the conclusion of the game's story.

Sure seems like you were telling me a fact, rather than stating an opinion, there.

Hermiod is right. Completing a game just means finishing the story or main quest. If someone played Super Mario Galaxy and beat Bowser, but didn't get all 120 (or 121) stars, are you going to tell them they never finished the game?

Now I personally didn't consider the game beaten until I had every star, but that's just me. If someone beats the final boss or final level of a game they've beaten the game.
