iPhone 4 (4G?) Phone Details and Pictures and Video "Leaked"

Please, Gizmodo has hardly revealed anything. They don't even say what hardware is in the damn thing. And since it was deactivated so quickly, they can only comment on how the device looks and what ports it has. There is plenty left to hype, because what Gizmodo has only allows a taste of what the final product will be like.

While that's true, Apple hasn't ever done a "leak" before with the iPhone and Jobs is known to be pretty heavy handed when it comes to revealing stuff to the public. They like keeping their cards close to their chest, they like doing their big press conferences and they're not hurting for cash so they don't need $5k from Gizmodo. Besides, if this one thing the iPhone has taught us about Apple it's that they like control... and giving info to Gizmodo ahead of their unveiling loses them control on marketing.

Gizmodo, on the other hand, is riding this as far as they can. They even went as far as to post the name of the Apple employee who lost the phone as well as a transcript of a phone conversation with him. Which they wouldn't bother to fabricated if this was a fake leak... and is also a pretty jerky thing for Gizmodo to do.

Why would Apple admit that it's a leak? It serves their purposes much better if it looks like an accident that they're now doing damage control over.

I'm not sure I follow? I would submit that the reason it looks like an accident because it was an accident.

For this to be fake, then either Gizmodo is complicit with Apple and is posting things that they know are lies, or the guy who sold the iPhone to Gizmodo was employed by Apple and they decided to publicly embarrass one of their engineers by giving Gizmodo his name and pinning the "loss" on him. If the whole thing was manufactured, why attach the engineers name to the story?

Perhaps Gizmodo was duped (and thus thinks it really is an accident), and the engineer was "well compensated" for his embarrassment.

It is still quite possible it's an accident, but I wouldn't rule out a ruse where Apple is concerned.

Based on the feature set, it sounds like they'll be on par with Android-based phones when they release this, assuming Android phones aren't on to something better by then.

Elaborate for me if you don't mind, what features makes it on par with Android?

California Penal Code Section 485
One who finds lost property under circumstances which give him knowledge of or means of inquiry as to the true owner, and who appropriates such property to his own use, or to the use of another person not entitled thereto, without first making reasonable and just efforts to find the owner and to restore the property to him, is guilty of theft.

It's not exactly on par--it's better in some areas, worse in others.

They apparently improved the battery life, gave it a bigger screen, added a front camera. While the CPU has yet to be identified, it's probably going to be in the 1GHz range to bring it up to speed with Android. The battery is still not removable, but hey, they got some more life out of it. The higher resolution is definitely a move to keep pace with Android phones. The Nexus One has a flash, and this new iPhone is getting one. They're including active noise reduction, which Android has had for a while now.

Basically, I don't see anything in this new iPhone that pushes Apple ahead of the pack again. When the iPhone first came out, it was innovative and stylish. Now, it's gotten tired and stale and competitors (especially Android-based phones) are threatening to gobble up their market share.

The guy who found it failed to report lost property. Then, he sold it--essentially fencing stolen property. And Gizmodo bought stolen property. Man, I sure hope it was a publicity stunt, or that Apple is feeling generous.

It's actually pretty tough to prosecute cases like that because there are so many ways to deny that you had any knowledge of who the owner of the found property might be.

CD, didn't Gizmodo publish the name of the Apple engineer who lost the phone?

I've already said a few times in this thread that Gizmodo did indeed post his name. At least read the thread you're posting it!

Also, the guy who found it did try to report it to Apple. He even had the guy's name via the Facebook app on the phone before Apple remotely bricked it. Apparently he didn't get through to the right channels for some reason and wound up with a customer support ticket.

Apple certainly knew the phone was out because they terminated it remotely. I'm sure they knew the name of the guy who lost it, either because he reported it or via GPS and the fact that he had signed it out.

While I was excited pretty much like everyone else about their "scoop" Their response to Apple's letter is to flippant to me. I understand they are trying to be funny but couldn't you just be professional.

It's the internet, you get some kind of points for making comments that are supposed to be funny. Everyone thinks they are a comedian here to keep us all entertained....

OK, here's the $64,000 question -- I've decided to upgrade to an iPhone as I've once again been in a situation where it would have been nice to access my e-mail while conducting errands. Chatted with a co-worker yesterday who has the 3GS-16 but said the 3GS-32 would be better; however, the 4G is rumored to be coming out in June. So, would it matter if I went ahead and got an iPhone (definitely a 3GS and not a 3G) or should I wait until the 4 comes out to see how much prices drop?

I am already an AT&T customer with a Nokia phone. AT&T will upgrade me to the 3GS-16 for $199 plus 2-year commitment; the 3GS-32 for $299 plus 2-year commitment; or the 3G-8 for $99. I am currently leaning toward the 3GS-16 and wonder if prices will drop dramatically when the 4 is released. It's about a two month wait, so I'm thinking to tough it out and see. Thoughts?

Wait until the 4 comes out, or at least wait until there's an announcement of some sort - the June release is still just a rumour.

June release is a bit more than a rumor. The biggest piece of evidence? AT&T Store employees have been denied all request offs for vacation time in June. The only other 3 times that's happened? You guessed it, the previous 3 iPhone launches. On that piece alone, it's safe to say AT&T thinks the phone is hitting retail in June.
