Invisibility Cloak Even Closer

Nope, that was a perfectly good argument to use. On the flip side, hell yes an invisibility cloak (and the technology) can be abused. The point is the potential is already there, just like hot air observer balloons in the Civil War, recon aircraft, and spy satellites. If cloak tech truly works as noted here, it's not going to somehow disappear (pun unintended), or otherwise be wished away. Deal with its existence, because if it's ignored by some, others will definitely exploit it.

By the way, if someone walks up to you in an invisible cloak, just hammer the daylights out of the spot where you hear breathing.

Orne,

I see it a bit differently than you. There are so many ways that our privacy can be violated already. This is just another way that our privacy can be violated.

Still you're right this is going to be developed no matter what. The thing that worries me is when they'll be able to cloak themselves from not just visible light but IR, radar and such...

The Duke cloak does have its limitations. It only works in two dimensions. Both the background and the hidden object must also both be wrapped in the metamaterial.
In other words, they are NOT on the verge of inventing invisibility cloaks that spies can use to enter houses and violate privacy. Relax, everyone. Although the discovery is fascinating, the article's title is written to make the discovery sound a lot sexier than it is.

Couldn't this be used to occlude satellites?

I remember reading about a National Applications Office, who's charter was signed in 2008 and essentially allowed satellite imagery which is gathered via intelligence agencies and via the military and could be shared with civilian agencies.

^ Even if by some miracle they get it so photons of all frequencies just go around (miracle is right on that count), cladding something in space with it won't help much. IR tracking will still be just as effective.
