Interesting way to disrupt a horse race

What were the odds? According to race caller George Simon he'd never seen the like of it before.
Neither had the racing fans watching, not to mention the poor horses or drivers.
Race two at today's Franklin Harness meeting at Pukekohe Park got off to what appeared to be a decent enough start, with only one horse breaking as the mobile car pulled away. King Wally, an appropriate name, as it turned out, led the field away.
However, at the end of the straight Simon was left searching for an explanation as the car skidded 180 degrees and nearly flipped before settling to face the oncoming field with the gates still out.
Simon summed it up quickly: "Whooaaaa, we've got an issue here," as the drivers tried to pull their horses wide of the still extended gates.

Damn. I had money on the car.

It was lucky that none of the horses or drivers were injured.

Do you know if the track was wet or not?

Harness racing? Feh. Real horse racing isn’t a wholesome trottin' race, but a race where they set down right on the horse!

We have those too, but they don't have starting cars.

I could find amusing yet scary videos of horses munting themselves in the jump gate when the races start.

But I won't.

Reminds me of a science fiction story about a guy who was incredibly lucky. He bet on a horse race, and his horse broke its leg ... but it still won. There was a huge pile-up of the other horses, and his horse limped across the finish line first.

“Munting”?

NZ term meaning smashed up-damaged-fucked, basically.

"The car was munted after the accident."

It doesn't get mentioned that much in the North Island. It was famously spoken by Mayor of Christchurch Bob Parker when he said his city, after the Feb 2011 quakes, was 'a bit munted'.
