Interest in Independence Day 3 movie/series

So the aliens invade and wipe out every city in the world...AGAIN? :guffaw:

Hell, I'm not aware of any explanation regarding how most of those cities were rebuilt so quickly between the first and second films....

Well, the sequel hook at the end of IDR was that we were going to track the aliens down and blow up or crush some of their cities for a change.

I was top-to-bottom disappointed with IDR. Well, the production design was cool and fairly well thought-out (give-or-take leaning too far towards recognizability for New London), but in terms of story, characters, the actual "movie" parts, it didn't come close to recapturing the magic of the first one. And how did they not bring back David Arnold to do the score?

I keep meaning to rewatch and reevaluate Resurgence one of these Fourths but I keep forgetting. I, too, was pretty disappointed with the film. Goldblum, Spiner, and Hirsch did the best they could with what they were given but it wasn't that much and none of the new characters made a connection with me. It was all spectacle and very little spark.

I was curious about the second alien species that showed up and their history of fighting the locust aliens, so if the potential third film and/or series covers that aspect and how humans join that interstellar fight, then I could be interested in it.

Otherwise...eh.

Nah. The original remains one of my favorite movies of all time. And as much as I really wanted to like the second one it's just not a good movie, by any rationality.

I think Emmerich is kind of done. I actually really enjoyed Midway, but it objectively has some serious issues. (Especially in the technical.) And that Shakespeare move was just fucking stupid.

I'm also hoping the Stargate sequel continues to remain in perpetual preproduction.

The only way I'm seeing this franchise seriously being resurrected is if Will Smith comes back. We saw with Resurgence that even getting Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, etc. back didn't spell box office success (of course that's not any of the veteran casts' fault; the story was terrible). I think retconning Hiller's off screen death could create some curiosity and buzz for it, but beyond that, I think the well is dry. Disney has Alien and maybe Predator (depending on the lawsuit) to play with, and Star Wars and Avatar, they are good on big budget, immersive, science fiction spectacles.

I would rather see them attempt to revive Tron or The Black Hole than do another Independence Day. If Amazon, Peacock, or Paramount Plus owned the rights I think Independence Day would have a better chance at revival.

Roland Emmerich is not someone I want to see revisit the ID4 Universe (I'm still glad that Stargate reboot thing they were talking about didn't happen). He was a tolerable director/producer/etc of action schlock in the 90s, but even then he had some major failures (like his version of Godzilla), and I can't think of anything good he's done since maybe The Day After Tomorrow.

Would I be willing to see a new ID movie under certain circumstances? Yes, but not with Emmerich making it, not after how bad Resurgence was.

What I would have liked to see is a movie called Memorial Day.... the plot being that WE have become the INVADERS, and a rebel force has to take US down.

As for Hlller.... his "accicent" could have been a test of some kind of hyper drive that doesn't kill him (though it seems like it) but takes him somewhere else, but they can't trace back where he came from, so he gets discovered much later.

That's not a movie. That's American history. :barf:

Yeah, that would work. Assuming Will Smith could be coaxed in returning.

I remember enjoying Resurgence when it saw it in theaters. It obviously wasn't as good as the original, but there was almost no chance it would be. I thought the set up at the end for where the story would go next was really interesting, and I would love to see it followed up on.

I'm a huge fan of ID4. I re-watch it pretty much every 4th of July weekend.

The less said about the sequel, the better- it suffered from "Lame Sequel Syndrome" in almost every way.

However...

There were a couple of plot points to work with in the sequel, poorly executed though it was. The first was the idea of Alien survivors running loose on the Earth. The second was the notion of a galactic society at war with the Aliens, and the idea that humanity might eventually take the war to the stars against them.

That is TV series material right there- all of it. I'd like to see those kernels taken, and a series developed that is a sequel to ID4 but totally ignores Resurgence. Basically, take the good ideas from Resurgence and reboot the the sequel as a TV series that picks up 20 years later, like the sequel did.

If it was done in the spirit of the original ID4, it would be fun. There are also some themes to explore there in terms of humanity on Earth going forward after the first movie: how hard would it be for us to drop our differences and unite as a planet / species? How would the possession of alien technology make solving those problems easier? Etc.

S1: Humans dealing with earth issues, Alien survivors, and the return of the aliens
S2: Humanity hits the stars, searching out the aliens and looking for their allies
S3: Full blown war, eradication of the aliens, kumbaya with the galaxy. Finis.

I would but 2 was bad. Even by my standards that it took me out.

Perhaps a series where the aliens turn up again, but this time they look just like us and state they have come in peace, but really they want to take all our water, eat us, and enslave us. Its only discovered by resistance fighters how they really look under their skin and a fight back commences, supported by a few of the aliens who are sympathetic and friendly..

Yeah that'll do it, im sure there has never been anything like that before.

I'd much rather see that Stargate movie reboot...
Probably.

I eventually saw the ID sequel on TV and rewatched the first movie afterwards. Neither is exactly good, but at least the first one had a little cheesy charm. The sequel sucked in all respects.

In truth it's just not worth continuing any further.

I read somewhere that Independence Day was originally a sequel to Stargate. With Ra’s race coming to Earth to attack. I don’t know if it’s true though

Their is still a few landmarks they can destroy so why not. The Eiffel tower,Grand Canyon, The Alamo,Mount Rushmore, St.Peter's Cathedral,Taj Mahal and Wrigley Field to name a few.
