Inter-Season Changes.

Tom Riley

I was just watching the Best of Both Worlds. I played part 1 and then part 2 right after. When the credits rolled on part 1 I skipped through them directly into the opening of part 2. Doing this really made me notice this one particular... for lack of a better word, discontinuity... Beverly's hair... changed hairstyles... in the middle of what was supposed to be one continuous event.

She is on the bridge, Riker orders the deflector weapon fired, end season 3.

Season 4 opens with Riker ordering the deflector weapon fired, her hair is suddenly different.

Now I realize that this is because Gates McFadden changed her hairstyle over the break, but I would have thought they would have taped the two parters together all at once. Clearly they didn't. I've seen this episode countless times, but I've never noticed this before. Are there other changes between seasons that show up in any of the two parters like this? For the seasons that transitioned with two parters that is...

I don't remember which two parter - it might have been Best of Both WOrlds - but I seem to recall Deanna suddenly getting really tan in part two.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with Gates changing her hairstyle. Wasn't she wearing wigs by this point?

Yeah she was wearing wigs so they should have just gave her the same one, its not exactly difficult

Is the lighting of the two scenes different, or is it the way you captured the images?

I don't think the hairstyle has changed, I just think they didn't recreate it exactly the same. Overall, though it strikes me as being pretty much the same hairstyle. It's not like it's gone from a bob to layers or something.

They have to style wigs, too.

Hmmmm shades of the Patty Duke show....it's all in the way the ends flip.
Cousins...identical cousins.....

sorry.

Am I the only one who noticed Beverly's nipples are extremely erect in those photos?
Also, her uniform changes.

At least the air conditioning on the bridge was the same in both shots. ;)

They didn't even write them at once. Michael Piller has freely admitted he had no idea how BoBW was going to end, and since he was considering leaving the show the idea was to leave it up to the luckless new guy.

You need to study anatomy more. Those aren't nipples, those are the ends of the seams on the costume.

Also, her uniform changes.

No, that's just a difference in the photographic processing. All the colors in the lower image are a bit more washed out, and maybe a bit more toward the yellow. It creates the illusion that Beverly's hair and costume are slightly different in color. But look at the black portions of the uniforms, and look at Data's hair. They also look less dark, less vivid.

Ya the hair style isn't different. The only thing different is on the side the first one is out more and the second one fell and sat on her face more. And I was thinking what Christopher was thinking. The lighting is different due to where their standing i think. And the seems on her uniform just end in a very unfortanate place.:vulcan:

No, her hair in the second picture is SO much thicker. WAY more volume, and the second picture looks like there is no product in it, while the first looks like it was at least hair-sprayed out and back slightly. Trust me, I know hair. ;) And it's not just those two pictures, it's any you compare from the two episodes. Her hair looks so noticeably different.

nevermind Crushers hair. check out the hair of the woman at ops between the seasons. part 1 long. part 2 short bob. also has a newer look uniform with a collar rather than as spandex sailor suit

This is nothing compared to the cliffhanger of Peter David's show Space Cases. When the new season began, supposedly seconds from where we left off, the entire interior design of their ship changed to something that didn't even remotely resemble the first season design.

I'll have to go look for that, I don't usually pay attention to the extras.

:guffaw:

I still can't spot any difference in Crusher's hair. The length, color and shape seem perfectly identical, and the many loose ends in the former only disappear from the latter because she's out of focus...

As for uniform color, though, weren't the blues notorious for changing with each laundering?

On the nipple issue, I remember hearing the studio insisted on padded bras to avoid any hint of the protrusions. Whether the female uniforms had a seam at that particular location for "extension" purposes, I don't know - the wrinkles there could equally well be an artifact of McFadden's bra, the straps of which prominently show through the thin fabric.
