Inside...a movie

Have you ever been to a movie where the 'real life' atmosphere enhanced your viewing of a movie? For example.

When I saw Aliens 3 (the one on the prison world) it was night time, and it was muggy, and the air conditioning was out...and the theatre was packed...it got so hot, and sweaty, and smelly, if felt like I was in the prison with them...it actually made it more 'interactive'...almost a YOU ARE THERE feeling...

Then, when I took my son to see DADDY DAY CARE, it was in the middle of the day..tons of kids were there running around...and I thought I was watching the film with a giant day care...

So, have you had any movie experiences that, well, added to the enjoyment, or heck lack of enjoyment, of a movie?

Hmm. Interesting thread.

I always prefer to go to a movie theater when I first see a movie. I know with prices, gas, and sometimes the obnoxious people, that going to the theater might seem like a hassle, and sometimes it is, but I just love the immerse experience of going to see something with a bunch of people and getting their reactions...it's the closest thing towards going to a theatre and watching a play and getting the experience "there and now", except what you're seeing isn't live but staged and previously recorded.

I am trying to think, and the only times I have had experiences that you're describing were in the comforts (or lack thereof) of my own home. Whenever watching a horror movie, like on Halloween, with all of the lights out, and no one in the house. That's not really a good example -- since yours were so descriptive and pertained to the actual feel of the movie you were watching -- so, no, unfortunately, I've never had such an experience but they sound quite fascinating!

I saw Die Another Day on a transatlantic flight, and the climax with the giant transport plane coming apart came just as we had some turbulence. Personally I loved it!

Also saw Snake Eyes in a big US Casino, just like the one it's set in.

I drove through the worst snow storm I've ever been in to see Golden Compass (and almost fish-tailed off the road at one point!), which took place in a wintry/snowy climate. Really set the mood. I loved the movie when I saw it... and then when I saw it again at home I didn't enjoy it nearly as much

Damn. I'm surprised they showed it with a scene like that in it. Were there any kids watching it then asking their parents, "Mommy what was that?"

Yeah, I thought they edited out chrashing planes during the in-flight movies. I know they edited out the statistics line in rainman (maybe Qantas didn't ), but the other airlines sure did.

Similarly, the location shooting of Superman The Movie, and, to an extent, the sequels, really helped me believe a man could fly.

Please don't post inline images that are that large. While the rules state to keep them around the filesize of an avatar, we usually let it slide if it's as high as the 200-300KB range. But 3067.83 KB is way too high, paralyzing any user who's on dial-up.

Please keep large files like that restricted to links.

When I took my wife to see DK she asked me, during that hold-up scene, if we were in the right movie. It certainly felt like HEAT or some other bank robbery movie...so yes. That is a good one!

I actually have an Alien 3 example as well. The first time I saw it was at home, but I had a pretty bad flu-like cold. I could follow the film but I definitely had a fever so I was burning up and feeling crappy, and everytime I closed my eyes I halucinated mile after mile of those grungy brown tunnels they run down. I'm not sure if it made me enjoy the film more, probably less, but it was definitely scary and immersive!

I was surprised too, but this was British Airways and they don't do airline edits - though the inflight magazine and a disclaimer before the movie both warned "Contains scenes of aircraft in distress."
