Influences of Star Wars on the New Trek

However, I think any and all similarities are probably purely coincidental.

"Not intentional" is not the same thing as "purely coincidental". Abrams loves Star Wars, and I have no doubt that when he was sitting down to think of what we be cool in his new Trek movie, his ideas of "cool" were heavily influenced by what he thought was cool when he was a kid, namely SW. I doubt anyone ever said, "hey, lets make this like star wars.", it was more of an inevitable result of someone who likes star wars naturally transposing some of what they liked onto a new setting

^ Fair enough, I can agree with that. It wasn't done on purpose, basically, is what I meant. ;)

You're kidding about the "Luke didn't make it to Captain by the end of the film" bit, aren't you? Because that's exactly what happened. He went from little farmboy to hero, just like Kirk actually. Only Kirk had had training at the Academy, and the help of dumb luck. Luke had "the Force".

Heck, Luke was bumped up to X-wing pilot based on nothing more than a solitary rescue mission in which he wasn't even a pilot. Of course, the rebellion was presumably more desperate for personnel than the Federation even after the loss of 6 ships and Vulcan.

Indeed the influence is pervasive, consider the following exchange rumoured to be found in the Director's Cut:

Spock: You are so... beautiful.
Uhura: It's only because I'm so in love.
Spock: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.

Spock-Vulcan has so much sand, I hate sand! it get's into everything!

Plus Scotty's mini alien friend reminded me an ewok

Well, shit. There was General Calrissian, Captain Solo, Commander Skywalker. The Alliance pretty much promoted anyone who was a major character, just like Star Trek. I think it's called the "movie star meritocracy." If you are the star of the movie, you get a promotion. It's also the reason why we didn't watch ten years of Kirk: The Farragut Years TV series to lead up to this film.

Can we do an 'influence of trek on star wars' thread?

The Enterprise would've kicked the death stars arse, imo.
