Infamous Star Trek fans....

Losing his salt shaker and not having a clue how his new tattoo got there.

A couple of years back when I was last on jury duty, one of the men in the pool was dressed in full "biker" regalia, and certainly look more ridiculous than the woman in the costume.

If he could were his silly costume in public, why not her?

I remember hearing at a Trek convention about a guy asking various cast members for samples of their blood. Anyone else recall hearing this?

Yep. The anecdote was told to a New Zealand ST convention panel I was on, called "When Fandom Ru(i)ns Your Life". Richard Arnold told the story of Jimmy Doohan, who was approached by a young fan with a syringe at one of the very early ST conventions. The fan was very polite, but insisted on a sample of the actor's blood. Doohan politely refused. About twenty years later, the same guy approached Doohan again, with the same polite request.

Richard also told of Heidi, the woman who infamously walked out naked at an early costume parade, wearing only a ribbon reading "I'm a gift for David Gerrold", who was the guest judge.

There was also a male fan who infamously used to turn up at convention parades coated head to toe in peanut butter. He called his costume The Giant Turd from Outer Space.

If someone wants to walk around in public in their Trek uniform that's their business.

Fine. But when that person starts asking me to call them "commander," that's where I draw the line.

"Appropriate" has nothing to do with it.

Bullshit. I'm as liberal and open-minded as they come, and there's no way in hell I'd ever dress inappropriately to something as important as a trial.

I remember the interviews with Ms. Brown. Her employees were required to call her Commander. She insisted on being treated with "the respect due" her "military rank". As a combat veteran, I was insulted. She never trained nor fought in battle. She never earned her "rank". I shall always consider her a nutcase.

Exactly. I was never in the military but I have the utmost respect for people who are. If I were one of her employees I would have told her to go to hell. That's what I mean about Trek fans having a bad rep, regardless of what someone does in their spare time.

Then that jackass should have been told to leave and return in a more dignified outfit. But it seems obvious from this person and Ms. Brown that they'll accept any idiot for jury duty.

Please note that I have already distinguished between "in public" and "the trial".

That said if she wasn't asked to leave because of it then I guess it passes whatever dress code there is for juries.

I don't recall her having any employees, I thought she just worked for the place and asked her employers to call her that. They seemed to be humoring her by doing so because they liked her.

Seeing as politicians tend to be viewed as infamous by supporters of the opposing party, Ronald Reagan, Al Gore and Barack Obama would all count...

I thought Ronnie Raygun was more a fan of Star Wars..?

How about the weird chick from the OJ trial, the juror who wore her Starfleet uniform all the time (even at work) and was called 'Commander'?
Wasn't that the Whitewater hearing?

Yes, Whitewater. She was an alternate juror. And I don't think she MAKES people call her commander. According to Trekkies, one of the people she works with (not "her employees", her coworkers) called her 'girlfriend' as a casual reference, and she didn't like that. They wanted something casual/familiar to call her, so she suggested "Commander" -- her rank in one of the fan organizations.

I don't think the issue is necessarily her having her co-workers refer to her as Commander (honestly, that is weird. Why couldn't they just call her something else) - The issue is that she went around complaining that she should have been treated with the same respect as officers in active service because she wore a uniform from a fictitious military organization. By doing that, you're insulting every man and woman of the military who've earned their bars in the service for doing their job in protecting us.

Starfleet ain't real, people who try to play it up as real need to get a major wake up call.

Who is Ms. Brown? Are you talking about Barbara Adams?

Reagan was a Star Trek fan? Really? Are you sure you haven't got Star Trek confused with Star Wars, as in Defense Initiative?

lol

I'm sure he toured the sets, maybe after he left office. Made a crack about Klingons being like Congress.

Yep, he visited the set while shooting Redemption part 1, and said he liked all the Klingon extras because they reminded him of Congress.

He was also very open about having made a point of seeing TSFS, and being disappointed with it...

Yes, I typed the name incorrectly. That is what I get for staying up late to post.

When it comes to Barbara Adams, people love to bring up the excuse "Well people can wear sports jersey's in public and it's alright, why not a Starfleet uniform?"

The difference with Adams is the whole "Commander" thing. What sports fan goes to jury selection wearing a Wayne Gretzky jersey and says "I'd like to be addressed as the Great One?" What sports fan goes to jury selection wearing a jersey in the first place?

Like it or not, there is a social code in our North American society at least that says, this a courthouse or this is a place of business and you will wear this. If she wants to wear her Commander uniform on casual Friday or to the supermarket and draw the stares of people, power to her.

But you have to draw the line somewhere.

My guess is none. Hockey is a sport in exactly the same way bowling is. And there aren't any great ones in either.

Soccer or football, sure. Hockey? Please to not be making me to be laughing. :guffaw:

Football?

With all the legal troubles of Brett Favre, Ben Rothelisberger, and Michael Vick, somehow someone wearing their jersey to a trial is quite ironic.
