Infamous Star Trek fans....

. . . “Vulcanize oneself” as a shield from showing emotion.
Just a thought (because I can't think of any insane or famous people who are fans....though I have some friends who I THINK are insane that are fans), the phrase “Vulcanise oneself” doesn't mean that person is a trek fan.
I thought it meant you were made of rubber.

How about the weird chick from the OJ trial, the juror who wore her Starfleet uniform all the time (even at work) and was called 'Commander'?

Whitewater, not OJ.

If Jones was watching Trek and trying to emulate Spock he qualifies as a trekkie by any reasonable measure.

Barbara Adams is the woman you're referring to. She is a Little Rock Arkansas native. Very nice lady if a little obsessed, but hey aren't we all! She was chosen for jury duty during the Whitewater Trial in Little Rock back in '96. She gained national attention for allegedly not taking the procedure seriously because she wore a red TNG uniform and sunglasses. In interviews she spoke of simply upholding Starfleet ideals and wished to prove her mettle by wearing the uniform. She wore one to work, public service events and when she did charity work. Not to mention shopping, going out, etc. She is a bit eccentric but she's, by all accounts a hard worker, dedicated employee and community minded.

At least she backs up her fanatacisim, what about us??

It's not hard to see how it's inappropriate for such an occasion. She can uphold the "ideals" without wearing a costume and (IIRC) a Playmates Toys' phaser and tricorder.

But wasn't the issue that she talked to television news, which you can't do whilst serving on a jury?

Hmm, not really "infamous", but at least "famous":

Jonathan Ross (famous in the UK at least)
Kelsey Grammar
Craig Charles (famous in the UK for Red Dwarf)
Barack Obama (mentioned earlier)

Jim Davidson, a comedian and ofrmer host of Big Break, in the UK is a well-known StarTrek fan. Like most comedians he's been known to make the occasional sexist, racist, and anti-disabled comment, probably enough for him to be considered infamous rather than famous.

"The occasional"? He made it the basis of his act throughout the 1980s.

Yeah, that was the problem. She had went to the media and started talking to them and as a juror you're under a gag order until the case is finished.

Her being in uniform was not the case. She probably even wore it to jury selection.

Once fantasy starts invading real life and a hobby now becomes an obsession, there's a problem. I kind of found it insulting that she demanded to be called a Commander and treated like a military personnel. The people in military dedicate and risk their lives in the military, earning their ranks through that sacrifice and running around trying to demand that same respect is making a mockery of those men and women.

I believe that was her rank in a star trek club, hence her asking to be called it. It's hard to tell from watching it though whether she is dead serious about being called it or whether she just got her workmates to call her "Commander" because it was her nick name.

Eh, I don't know. I think I recall her actually stating that she wore a Starfleet uniform and should have been treated with the same respect as military officers as it was a military uniform... or something like that.

I was in NJROTC back in high school but I didn't demand everyone call me Chief Petty Officer - or try to wear my uniform at every function... and that was legit, albeit civilian, military.

She just crossed the line there. :(

I remember hearing at a Trek convention about a guy asking various cast members for samples of their blood. Anyone else recall hearing this?

Infamous fans? James Dixon, hands-down. He's been banned from more places in the last quarter century than any other six fans.

Sorry, but it had to be said. >:)

That "jury duty lady" really wore that uniform all the time? And demanded to be called "Commander"? Damn, that's...odd.

When I originally saw her on the news, I just assumed it was a ploy to avoid jury duty that blew up in her face.
