Although it isn't proven beyond doubt, there is a great consensus that the ultimate fate of the Universe is that it will eventually die due to the Big Freeze or the Big Rip. At that point, life is impossible anywhere in the Universe and the Universe is dead forever.
When I first learned that the Sun will burn out and engulf Earth a few billion years later, I was very despondent. But then I thought that by then we would have learned to move to other planets or even transition to life in artificial bodies that can just roam outer space freely. Worse case, humans are extinct but there supposedly would be life somewhere else in the Universe right?
Well now I learned that the Universe itself will "burn out" in the Big Freeze or Big Rip! Now maybe ultimate reality is that even if THIS universe dies, maybe there are other Universes with life. Or maybe the scientists are wrong although they seem very certain right now!
The inevitable death of the Universe is truly inescapable! And once that happens, it is dead for all eternity. It is very disturbing!
