Independance Day Sequels

^ The aliens from ID4 can't come back. That was their entire civilization on that ship. When it went, so did they.

My understanding is that the sequel premises hold that there was an even larger mother-mothership behind the one we blew up, and that was an advance force to soften us up for the eventual occupation.

ok silly question, what does the 4 in ID4 stand for? ok its clear that ID is Indepdence Day, but what does the 4 mean?

and behind that ship was a BIGGER ship, and behind THAT ship was the Death Star...there are a number of theories as to the depth and scope of what was going on in the ID-4 verse, and it's all rubbish, ID-4 was just a summer blockbuster with no extra thought put behind it, the aliens were 2 dimensional and generic, and the human actors portrayed just about every movie hero stereotype imaginable, if this was to be some massive, well thought-out space opera we'd be up to the 5th sequel by now, it isn't like the movie didn't make metric fcuktons of money and warrant a sequel if that was the case

The problem with most of the suggestions for ideas for sequels here is that they are the kind of sequel you'd write for a novel, or a hard-scifi film: Dealing with the aftermath of the destruction of almost every major city, salvaging alien technology and integrating it into you own, desperately trying to contain any alien survivors who may still be on the planet.

But all these ideas are too "high brow" to work as a film sequel to ID4. The average audience would want another film jam packed with monuments blowing up, not a thoughtful treatise on the perils of advancing in technology too quickly.

Which means they'd resort to yet another alien ship coming and laying waste, which would ultimately just be a retread of the first film. So really i expect them to wait another few years and just do a remake. In 3D!!!

Or perhaps they will film one of the novels. There's at least one prequel (about Dr. Okun) and one sequel (about the surviving aliens who find their way out of the crashed city destroyers).

The reason there has never been sequels is Will Smith always said no, otherwise there would be 10 sequels by now.
